Is This Yeast Starter Shot?

    We tried out a yeast starter with a homebuilt stir plate for the first time to use with our Pumpkin Ale that we are brewing this Sunday. it has been spinning for about 13 hours and then we woke up to the below. Is this shot or is it still ok to pitch on sunday? Thanks for the help

    What do you mean by 'shot?' It looks like a perfectly normal starter that's (probably) still making cells.

    Krausen is normal for fermenting beer.

    Apologies for the noobism on my part. We posted this photo to our homebrew group and a member said that it's already started to ferment and that it might not be viable to pitch.

    The point of a yeast starter is to increase cell count which is done through fermentation. Yes fermentation is happening, which is exactly your goal here.

    Now I am really confused. Sounds like someone in the club doesn't know what they are talking about.

    A yeast starter is fermentation with the sole purpose of regenerating and growing more yeast. This is to ensure that you are pitching enough yeast into the beer that you brew.

    You can understand my confusion as well when we posted up the picture to our group just to make sure we were doing things right on our first starter. =)

    Smell it and possibly taste it. It won't smell or taste great. You'll know if it's infected though.

    There's nothing in the picture or his statement that would indicate infection. Pretty sure the only problem is the misinformation given by the homebrew club member. That starter looks perfectly fine.

    Not 'shot' but also not optimal.

    Palmer recommends pitching at Hi-K (as seen on OP's pix taken on Thursday) or "...wait until the yeast have finished fermenting and settled out before pitching to the main wort.."
