I recently saw it at Whole Foods in bottles, and I didn't see anything relating to BB aged on the label, bit on BA it is only listed as BB. Aged and papy aged. Is this beer only available in BB aged form? Or has it simply never been added to BA before in regular form?

You must have seen Velvet MerLin, which is FSW's non-barrel aged oatmeal stout. Delicious.

I have yet to see it in bottles, though they said they may come out this year. Could it have been regular velvet merlin in new packaging? Otherwise this could be the first bottles im guessing.

Velvet Merkin is BA and served on tap. I guess they'll bottle it this year. Originally I hear that was what Velvet Merlins name was, but for some reason changed. So i'm guessing maybe velvet merlin is the base beer for BA velvet merkin.

Velvet Merkin USED to be Velvet Merlin, but they had to change they name. However, legalities aside, they are able to use "Merkin" again, so it's barrel aged Merlin now. It's being bottled for the first time this year.

Edit: It's not out until September. Check it out here.

I was very confused by SeaOfShells' post meself.

All I know is Merlin is the mediocre one and Merkin is the pretty good one.

must be pretty rarefied air, up there in the altitude where Velvet Merlin, a 91 beer advocate user-rated beer, is "mediocre".

Not playing holier-than-thou - just horribly underwhelmed by Firestone Walker. I actually prefer Merkin to Sucaba and Parabola. And unfiltered DBA, for that matter.

    How's that for 'rarefied'?

I actually looked up some of your ratings; your rDev on about twenty beers I love, tells the tale. You're just a tough grader, but consistent, which is cool.

    To each his own, cheers!

koj be crazy - Velvet Merlin is about as punchy and aggressive as oatmeal stouts get, and with the killer velvety body that the style affords. One of my go-to's all winter and spring season long.

Merkin is BA and tap only until 9/13.

I hope I didnt spill the beans on that one.

Then it will trade for Daisy Cutter or something embrassingly less delicious.

I had no idea what a merkin was until recently. I feel shame.

Perhaps a different Hobby is in order, I doubt I would spend so much time drinking stuff I don't like. Based on your reviews there is little you have really enjoyed, tough reviewer is one thing, but your "Hads" appear ridiculous, if they are even legit.

I can't wait for Velvet Merkin. It's a fantastic beer. Had it on tap a few times and thought it was great. I found it to be more bourbon forward than others from FW. I'm guessing Merkin is 100% bourbon aged while parabola and Sucaba are blends from various vessels.

I'm guessing that Merlin as an oatmeal stout, while certainly good, doesn't have nearly as much depth or breadth of flavor as the imperial stout and barleywine used for Parabola and Sucaba, leaving more room for the bourbon barrel notes on the palette.

Fun fact - a merkin is a pubic wig.

Knowing this makes an active imagination run wild when consuming a product named Velvet Merkin.
