Is your beer fridge selection more about breadth or depth?

In a thread a while back about how much beer was too much beer to stockpile, I was surprised how many posters said that they typically buy one or two six-packs, drink them and then buy more. The reasons varied from monetary, to limited fridge space to freshness concerns.

I'm at the complete other end of the spectrum. I have 30-40 different bottles/cans in my fridge at all times. One of my favorite times of the day(sad, I know) is getting home from work, opening the fridge and surveying my options as I choose the beer that best suits my mood at the time. Having only one or two choices waiting for me would drive me nuts (actually it would probably drive me to stop on the way home and buy more beer).

I typically drink one, sometimes two beers a day, and I rarely if ever want another of the same if I am having two. Some friends on the other hand have expressed frustration with my "don't fall in love with anything you choose, 'cause you probably won't find another cold one" policy. For them, when you find something you like, you want to stick with it for the rest of the night.

So, where do you fall on the spectrum? Do you like a lot of variety to choose from? Do you like to stick with the same beer when you're having more than one? Do freshness concerns keep you from stocking beers you might not get to for a while?

Obviously, there are no right or wrong answers. I just though it would be fun get some feedback.

Not sure about others but I only keep a handful of beers in the fridge, but have 200+ unique bottles in the cellar so I have a good variety to choose from. I either drink them cellar temp or maybe 15 minutes in the fridge to put a mild chill on them.

I like varity. Even though I have a keg or two on tap at all times somtimes I like to dip into my beer fridge for styles that are not on tap. When I pack my cooler to go fishing there is always 4 or 5 different beers.

I have traded to the point where I have about 1 of almost every beer I've ever wanted. Main reason being I can't buy them due to the abv laws in Ohio which don't allow for the bcbs's and such. For that reason I can't afford to keep going for too many multiples unless there distributed here, such as kbs, blacknote, etc. even those are a bitch to get. My depth rarely goes past a six pack of any style

Variety rules. My collection isn't vast in numbers, but it is definitely eclectic.

I'm basically like you, I have about 30+ beers in the fridge (typically), but that's partially because I want a beer to suit my mood, but also because I also have a fridge for aging my beers in so I need stuff to drink as well as to age.

If I like something enough I'll keep more than one in the fridge at a time (if possible since some limited releases are a bitch to get more than one), but in general I'm not content unless I'm trying new stuff quite a lot. I usually have styles ranging from DIPAs to Porters, to Saisons to Stouts and just about everything in between.

I'm in the same boat myself, just a bit less than yourself in the cellar. Currently around 94 in my cellar. Definitely like to have variety. I keep about 15 brews in the fridge and everything else stays in the cellar. I also keep a few of a couple brews in order to complete any future trades. I also just have a horrible obsession. I hit my local bottle shops at least twice a week looking for that one shelf pull.

And to actually answer the the original question in this thread, it's all about breadth but still some depth as well. I just like what I like and what intrigues me. Once I see it and want it, I buy it.

My problem is that I spend so much time and money searching and trading for beers that once I have them, I don't want them to go away.. But I took 2 big steps last night and shared a Dreadnaught and a Pipeworks Glaucus. I'm on the road to recovery from my beer hoarding disorder..

I have a full size fridge in the garage dedicated just to beer(and a few wines and wine coolers for the wife) and rarely do I allow it to drop below 40 beers. Typically depending on style and preference dictates what lies within. My favorite styles these days tend to be stouts, tripels and weizenbocks so typically you can find at least four or more different brands of these at any time in my fridge usually consisting of multiple bottles of each. The rest of the space is taken up by multiple other styles just for when I am in the mood.

I have a similar problem, albeit on a less grand scale. When I find a beer I like -- even if it's readily available year round -- I make sure I almost ALWAYS have a six on hand. Needless to say, this results in an ever-expanding cache. And, yeah, with limited releases/seasonals, I find it hard to pop the cap on the last one for the year.:slight_frown:

I have a fridge downstairs dedicated to beer, this fridge will contain many styles and brands throughout the year. I love to open up the fridge and "survey" to see what bottle (can) I am going to drink that particular day. I think in the winter I probably more of a variety in the fridge, the summer months I tend to stay away from Stouts and Porters (not 100% just less in summer) I probably grab at least one or 2 everyday, on the weekends I tend to grab more.

So I usually have 20 -30 in there to grab from I suppose.

I have about 150 bottles in my house right now, I'd say 130 of them are different.

My problem is its hard for me to drink the same beer twice even how much I love the beer.my thing is I want to try as many beers as I can so I keep about 5 to 10 diffrent beers in the fridge at all times

I usually hit my craft brew outlet once every 2 months and mix up a couple cases. I keep them in the cellar until they're ready to be chilled.

I need variety in my life, especially in the beer I drink. When my fridges are stocked I may have 10 or 12 different homebrews on tap(everything from pale ale to soured porter. I also will have 30-50 different bottled/canned beers at a minimum, again spanning as wide a spectrum as there is. I have IPA's, rauchbiers, sours, brett beers, porters, stouts, rye beer, some barleywines, ciders, mead, you name it I probably have at least one example of it(except gose or Berlinner weiss)

I generally go by a six-pack at a time. I only drink on the weekends, and I don't like having all the fridge space occupied. That plus some homebrew easily gets me by.

I like to have between 10-15 bottles in my fridge at all times and usually the makeup is 10-15 different beers. I never know what I'm going to be in the mood for so I like to be ready. I also have 100+ bottles in my "cellar" that I can put in the fridge for a short time if I want something that isn't immediately ready. I won't be going thirsty any time soon.

Probably by a 6 pack or a few bombers at at time. I pretty much only have a beer or two on the weekends. Stay pretty busy due to work and family obligations such as sports and dance activities for the kids.

I usually have 2 or 3 kegs of homebrew on tap and another commercial 6 or 12 pack in the fridge. When I drink, I usually stick to one of the homebrews, then supplement here and there with the 6/12 pack.

I don't do the no-same-beer-twice-in-a-row thing. Nothing wrong with those who do (seems like pretty much everyone else in this thread), just not for me. But some might say I have an ulterior motive. Whatever, I just really like beer.
