Hey folks! I collect caps as a hobby and currently have over 10,000 caps kept in glass vases. I have begun purchasing large sections of sheet metal and magnets in bulk to start making "murals" on the walls of the mancave. The caps would have the magnets glued to the back and the sheet metal will have some sort of trim around the sides to give them a finished look. I think it will look amazing when finished.

The thing I dig about this idea is that the caps are displayed but still placed in temporary positions. I wanted to do the whole bar top/ epoxy thing but I also wanted to keep adding to the collection. So, say I get a 2014 Bigfoot cap next year, I still get to add it next to the others instead of only being able to display Bigfoot caps up to 2013 on a bartop.

I am extremely interested to know if anyone has any stashes of caps laying around that they aren't planning on using for anything, if they would like to donate to the cause. I'm always looking for regional caps that I don't have or for older or different versions of the caps I do have or caps that I have just plain missed over the years. Pictures of the finished products will follow but it will probably take a while. Maybe I have a few things to trade for your caps that might be of interest to you, who knows? Message me if interested! Thanks so much!

Also, would anyone have any of the Stone 10th anniversary caps for trade?

I'd be interested in trading caps for caps. I just need to find some way of cataloging my doubles. Maybe I'll lay them out and get a few photos in the next few days, then we can take this to PM and work out a deal.

I had seen that! That's awesome! The only thing is I have a defibrillator implanted in my chest. I can see me walking past that thing and getting some volts shot through me.

Yeah on the cap for cap trades, I typically just exchange scans or photos with another person over email, and mark the choices using a paint-type program. Seems to be the easiest method. I used to try and keep a website updated but life kept getting in the way of updating it.

Got anything good? I have a couple Birmingham Brewing caps, but you probably have those already since you're from Alabama. Give me a shout, I collect caps maybe I have a few you need, like Bud, Miller and Coors... maybe a Sam Adams or two.

I'm curious what magnets you plan to use. For a large project the button magnets are too expensive so I'm interested to hear about what you've found, and if it's a reasonable cost. I'm working on a project that will mount 4,000 caps, but the magnetic sheets that I cut down to cap size are just too weak so that the caps easily fall when bumped lightly.

    4000 caps is a lot.

I personally do not display my collection with magnets (except for 100-150 random caps on the fridge) but if you are saying you cut the magnetic sheets down to the size of the cap, that might be where a problem arises. I would assume that the best way is to leave the magnetic strip whole and use the caps interlocking skirt crimps to create a chain of caps on one strip. Of course you are going to want to make sure all possible contact between cap and magnet is maximized... meaning if you have a bent cap and only 2/3 is in contact with a magnet, you're probably f-ed.

I agree individual magnets are expensive and for a large collection I don't think this is the best display method. I know of collectors who have mounted a rail system to the wall so that caps are contained within a defined gap and are slid into place from the rail end sections. IMO, the easiest way is to create a wooden picture frame (board with rails that create a pocket) and cover it with glass or plexiglass. yes, a pain in the balls to add new caps to but the caps under glass can now be mounted to the wall as pictures of art.

I've never understood this.... the caps are magnetic, why go thought the extra step of glue when the magnet serves the same purpose? Magnetic bond to the metallic cap. magnetic bond to the metal substrate.

^^^ I have found that the magnets (for the few button magnets that I've used) lose their grip because of the plastic/rubberized liner of the cap, and they have to be glued inside the cap. Or am I missing your point?

So, I have bags... And bags... Of caps. I assume it is between 2 and 8k. Any offers? I'll narrow it down if people want them. Like every cap for the past 6 years.

Nope, you got my point. I've never experienced that... possibly my magnets are a little stronger.

Mothergoose- to answer your original question: I have not found a good option for expensive magnets. Anything that I have gone with in bulk that is cheap is too weak to hold the caps if there is a chance they are going to be shook or brushed against. I have a feeling that I am either going to have to bite the bullet and pay alot for magnets a little at a time, or find another method of display.

My main reason for not wanting to put them under epoxy or even glass for that matter, is that I would like to be able to add to breweries or move the caps around as I please. Magnets seem to be a logical choice, but a poster on here named Sir Bottlecap has a really cool method that I may go to involving plywood, screws and velcro.
