That is true. However, I remember a thread from the old forum concerning a clone recipe for Alpine's Nelson, and several of the posts mentioned Southern Cross. Not sure where the posters got that info; Alpine seems to keep a tight lid on their recipes. Also, I've been lucky enough to drink Nelson on tap at the brewpub a couple of times within the last few years, and it just seems to me that there's more going on in that beer than just Nelson Sauvin. If you know of an accurate/reputable clone recipe for Alpine's Nelson, I'd be happy to be proven wrong!

“If you know of an accurate/reputable clone recipe for Alpine's Nelson, I'd be happy to be proven wrong!” I don’t have an ‘accurate’ clone recipe. From what you and barfdiggs posted concerning Alpine being ‘secretive’ I doubt that an ‘accurate’ clone recipe exists.

    Cheers!

P.S. I did homebrew an IPA that was intended to be a clone of Alpine Duet. I can’t vouch for how ‘accurate’ my recipe was since the best that I could do was leverage the Alpine description of “Our original single IPA made with Simcoe and Amarillo hops “in harmony.” I made the executive decision that “harmony” = 50/50 combination of Simcoe and Amarillo for each bittering addition.

Here is the link to the purported clone recipe I mentioned earlier. It utilizes Southern Cross and Nelson, not Moteuka as I incorrectly remembered:

Um, apparently, yes. I didn't even look at the dry hop amounts. It could be a repeat typo as the same amounts are listed twice for each hop, with the same number of days for each pair.

I like making really hoppy beers, but thats a bit over the top for a single IPA. As a skewed reference point, I've used as much as 13 oz of dry hops for a 10.5 gallon batch of beer before, but it was a double dry hopped 12% imperial black IPA.

Thanks to barfdiggs for posting the link to the recipe. The dry hop amounts do seem to be overkill. I'm thinking that there must be some sort of law of diminishing returns that would come into effect. As far as I can tell, though, hopville's calculator doesn't allow you to enter more than 7 oz. for a single hop addition. So, if the recipe designer truly intended to dry hop with 9 oz. each of Nelson and Southern Cross, he/she would have no choice except to enter the amounts in separate additions as presented in the recipe.

I will attempt the clone Verbatim some time next week, and will follow up with tasting notes, OG, FG, etc. Does anyone know if the dry hopping schedule is a typo? or does it mean 11 days of dry hops, followed, by another 11days? any feedback/input would be awesome, and would be willing to ship out bottles to anyone that has attempted this recipe and gives me some feedback /input. i can get alpine ipas fresh and fairly easy so i will be sure to have a side by side tasting of this homebrew. I dont mean to brag but been doing all grain batched for ~5years, and have medaled at several big time homebrew comps in So Cal, in other words this aint no rookie attempting the Nelson Clone .

I did a Nelson/Galaxy DIPA and everyone that tasted it asked me if I used a bunch of C-120 and I did not. Nelson is way too dark fruity/winey for my likings, but then again I like cat urine so maybe I'm not a good person to comment.

I've changed my mind about Sauvin. I find it's a very good hop if used properly. I find for me, if I load a beer up with it, it's not really to my liking, but used in conjunction with other hops in small amounts or at FO in a big dose with other hops, it's very nice.

Few threads exist on these forums that don't have some sort of citra/simcue/cat-pee derail.

I'm also "pro" cat-pee, FWIW. :astonished:

Curious if you made a run at this recipe, and if so, how it turned out? Do tell!

Edit: answered my own question, and found your new post: http://beeradvocate.com/community/threads/alpine-nelson-ipa-clone.72447/#post-1093954

Looking forward to reading more from you on this batch. Thanks for posting!

The best example of a Nelson beer I have had is Zeelander IPA from Toppling Goliath in Iowa. It is a single hop ipa that blew my mind. You may want to contact them for some advice on using it if you get your hands on some?

I would invite you all to clean my cat's litterbox and let me know if the experience resembles a pint of alpine Nelson.

Nelson Sauvin is a great hop, very distinct and the most potent aroma I have encountered.
