Boise's annual RIS tasting is coming up and I don't want to wait until the last minute like I do every year. So I am asking you guys to post in this thread about overlooked gems of big stouts from your neck of the woods.

This is the 9th year and it is getting bigger every year.

Last year there were 136 bottles/growlers drained and a few kegs were tapped.

I always try to bring obscure but high quality brews... and stuff my normal tasting group hasn't had before.

    Please fire away.

    Thanks, Toby.

In Ohio I would list the following

    Great Lakes Blackout Stout
    Hoppin' Frog B.O.R.I.S. the Crusher
Thirsty Dog Siberian Night Imperial Stout

And of course almost any Dark Apparition or variant from Jackie O's.

Enjoy! It sounds like a good time.

There are some impressive RIS being brewed in Spain at the moment. But they usually see limited local release and sellout before anyone non local gets a taste. That could be something different for you.

I'd recommend anything by Nomada, Vanilla black velvet by La Quince in Madrid, Aupa Tovarisch from Laugar Brewing. An upcoming release from Basqueland Brewing Project which tastes great already straight from the fermentor. There's also the curiously packaged Medical Stout from La Calavera in Barcelona.

I'd also highly suggest the base beer, Double Negative which I think may be even better than the barrel-aged version.

Tallgrass big ricc, great beer and readily available in their distribution area.

Off the top of my head:

    - Community in DFW has been doing solid work with their BA (and to a lesser extent, non-BA) Legion. Should be relatively easy to trade for as it sits around for a little while when a batch drops.
    - Austin Beerworks Sputnik or Midnight Swordfight (growlers only and the latter might be difficult to find a fill of)

Keep an eye out for Tired Hands pretty much any RIS. Their stout game has gone up several notches since Mike LaRosa from Kane joined them. The only thing is that they are growlers only, but they do hold up pretty well.

    MN:
    • Lift Bridge BA Silhouette (regular silhouette is nothing impressive, but there is quite a wide opinion that BA Silhouette is the best beer made in MN)
    • 2015 BA Darkness
    • Bent Paddle Double Shot Double Black (bottling soon) or Double Black (been bottled)
    • Stouts from Town Hall if someone has growlers
    • Indeed Rum King

Are you trying to keep this non barrel aged or both?

    I'm going to add

Orpheus The Ferryman - hazelnuts and vanilla beans added. Really well done. Was pleasantly surprised.

If you want to go big time trade fishing, then I would suggest Clout Stout by Nail Brewing in Australia.

Aussie beer is super expensive (it is a $70 bottle) but we cracked a 2012 last weekend at a share, and it was excellent. Murray's Wild Thing is another extremely good Aussie Imperial Stout.

If you do decide to go for it, then just be aware that Australian Customs will confiscate and destroy any alcohol they find in the mail. It is a risk (I go to Australia every year to see family so I do IP trades) but if you want obscure...
