I have read that Threes Brewing is partnering with JA and are having their beers brewed there. Is that old news?

Could you post a link? A quick Google search didn't turn up anything useful.

Based on this survey, JA still has some spare capacity, so it's certainly possible. https://www.bizjournals.com/boston/...05/11/largest-breweries-in-massachusetts.html

Also, I'm wondering if there is some double counting going on in those results as JA is contract brewing a portion of Night Shift's production.

I can't find where I read it but a beer of theirs said brewed and canned at Framingham. I'll keep looking.

Here's a conversation that I read on Untappd.

Does this matter to you? I ask because it matters to me. Not necessarily in terms of making my purchasing decisions but more so in that I do think consumers deserve transparency regarding where their beers are brewed.

Yeah it matters. The shipment was for beers from Brooklyn and when I read the label of All or Nothing I was perplexed.

Thanks for responding. That would be jarring to experience.

Also open to the wider group's thoughts on this. I think it's important for the brewery to not only communicate openly that they're doing contract brewing but also on their packaging.

I agree. I make the majority of my beer purchase decisions based on where the brewery is. I try to stick to New England to keep my beer dollars local. One of the reasons I buy most of my beer from JA, beyond the fact that I enjoy the quality and variety of the styles they brew, is that I can pick them up directly from the brewery and I know that the maximum amount of my purchasing power is staying with a local, family-owned and -operated business that hires local employees. This helps keep the economy strong in the area I live, improving everyone's standard of living.

If JA were to contract out their brewing to another part of the country, that would be a deal breaker for me as it changes the scenario from supporting a local business to just buying from a company doing business locally.

Yeah for sure, that would be a bummer. I don't think we have to worry about Jack's outsourcing their brewing, considering they seem to have excess brewing capacity to accommodate contract brewing for the likes of Night Shift and apparently Threes. I think it would be kind of a bummer to be on the other side of that though, if you were buying NS and Threes. Like yes, NS, it's still local, but they're not doing it themselves. At least that is public information. The Threes example that @Bitterbill provided is a huge bummer. It just doesn't feel the same if you are getting a Three's of Brooklyn beer and you see that it is brewed in Framinham, Massachusetts. That lack of transparency sucks.

Part of the reason I am bringing this up is that it seems like a lot of breweries are struggling with growth and using contracting as an option. Some have been up front about it like Notch. I think there are others out there that are contracting but not fully disclosing that they are doing it. What's worse is that in states like Maine, you don't have to disclose that. I think transparency is good for consumers. In some cases, that is lacking.

I agree that transparency is the key point. Knowing that a brewery is contracting, and with whom, is critical to allow each individual to decide for themselves whether that is an issue for them.

I could see contracting working out well in some cases. It could be a way for small breweries to keep their identity, churn out new ideas, and maintain a local access point and presence in a community, but have a majority of brewing done by a larger (hopefully craft) outfit with (presumably) more rigorous methods and quality control, and smaller per-unit costs.

Yes to all of this. Although, Notch was never struggling with growth, they chose that as a business method early on and were transparent about it from the get go, I mean they did it before they even had a brewery of their own. The way it’s going now seems like a reaction to larger breweries closing recently and a nervousness to invest further in production. Contracting is safe because you can either have enough beer to satisfy needs..or stop. It’s a safe route for businesses, but at the same time the original quality comes into question and the lack of transparency is disgustingly sneaky. This goes especially from breweries that pride themselves about being local. I also wonder the effect it has on jobs. We all know the route NS took. I’d be pretty pissed on the other side too, brewing for jack’s and then suddenly having to brew something I don’t have a hand in or care about.

Assuming this is a massive batch from the email. A couple states will be getting distribution.

I cannot wait for this, long time coming and Ill probably grab case, but I will continue to beat the drums for the collaboration I've been hoping for since they switched distributors:

Schlenkerla. Rauchbier & maple bourbon aged rauchbier.

Facebook post today shows a killer mix pack being released today as well. Munich fest, copper legend, post shift pils and House Lager.

Dumb question but certain releases such as the Rye Pilsner etc are available to go only from the brewery? I haven’t been up in years which is sad.

I grabbed this a few weeks ago. When I saw this on the release calendar I assumed it would be 4 seasonal beers so slight disappointment that it included 2 year round beers. But still a solid mix pack, Munich fest is really good.

Looks like the collab with Weihenstephaner is being packaged today.
