I need a color and an abv/attenuation. Maple smoke and dagger would be an interesting starting point.

Collabs almost universally end up being less than the sum of their parts, so I don't usually get excited by them. That said, a smoked maple lager sounds incredibly unique and intriguing, and a very rare case where a collaboration actually makes some sense given the expertise of the two breweries here.

that's what i was thinking... lawson's "maple prowess", JA's "smoked lager prowess". a hoppy IPL would make sense too, since lawson is a tier or two higher than JA in the hopping department, while JA make the best "beer backbone" for a hop bomb of anyone, in my opinion.

also, it may not be greater than the sum of its parts, but given that JA is leading the charge it should be 1) excellent, 2) affordable, 3) reasonably easy to get.

I talked with one of the JA brothers for a bit at the Beers for Boston thing about this beer. He said it would be slightly dark and slightly smokey (probably in-between Smoke and Dagger and Fire in the Ham). He didn't know exactly what maple was being used, but thought it was the same Lawson's always uses. I believe he said the wood to be smoked was coming from Lawson's property or nearby. I can't remember what he said about the hop profile.

I agree with the earlier posts about collaboration never reaching the level of expectation of the consumer, but with these two breweries I'm excited. Of course, I was also super excited about the Lawson's/MBC "Collaboration Time 1," which was just okay.

It sounds interesting. I plan on giving it a go. I'm not going in with any expectations. Maybe I'll be surprised.

Hopefully they don't charge twice what the beer is worth like the latest DFH/SN collaboration which now collects dust.

rhizing bines was a real miss, at least as packaged. i had it at a bar and thought it was alright, but honestly it's not good enough to go beyond "value 4pk" or something. definitely not 750ml material.

Imagine how I felt after spending $16 on it. It wasn't awful, it just should've retailed in the 8-10 dollar range

Kind of how I feel about every DFH 750. Even the better ones aren't worth more than $8 or so. Yet lately I'm seeing prices creep up into the $15 range, which is ludicrous. Somebody must be paying it, but I don't know who, because their prices just don't align very well with their review scores.

I've never had Lawson's, or any maple associated beer. I like Smoke and Dagger. I don't like sweet or sweet-flavored beers, generally I prefer to stick to beer flavored beer. Do you think I will like this product?

Its the people that are just transitioning to craft and dont know any better or what else is in their distro that they would like better.

Im sure we all know people who have gotten into craft in the last year to 6 months who is very pumped to talk about and drink DFH. They will buy all of their beers because its all they know. I know this because I was that way 3 years ago. I was the sucker that would spend 15 bucks on this and not even think about it.

it's true, and a shame. these extra-market pressures are driving up DFH prices... the beer is good enough for vets to buy it at competitive prices, but i'm being priced out of the little oddities these days.

Met mr Lawson during a tour from jack himself Friday. The beer is being made with lactose, and will be brewed with one part maple syrup per barrel. So one thirtieth of the final product will have been maple at some point! Cheers! Also it's being smoked on maple wood:slight_smile:

    Does part=gallon?

    part does indeed equal gallon!

Nit picking, but there are 31 gallons in a barrel, so 1/31 parts maple syrup if part does indeed equal gallon.
