This is speculation, but they may have simply decided to formalize what a core beer is. Previously, it seemed like they just lumped all of the main beers into core because they weren't seasonal or specialty. Maybe now core is the top 5 varieties by volume and everything else gets put into categories? You can see from last year's calendar that Hoponius Union also moved from core. I can't find it now, but I remember listening to a podcast where Jack said that a majority of their volume is in House Lager and Post Shift.

What does core mean? My initial guess would be a greater distribution footprint (or saturation) and amount brewed, but in reality it might just be marketing speak. I know plenty of places, even here in MA, that stock most or all of the other core beers but don't have Smoke and Dagger, so it definitely isn't a requirement from the distributor. I put it as a "lowlight" speculating that it could be a first move toward shifting S&D to a more limited/specialty distribution or scale (but making it available year-round rebuts that somewhat).

    That is a reasonable thought/guess.
Well, I can report that is consistent with what Jack Abby's beers are available in my area (Philly area). House Lager is the most popularly available beers at my local beer retailers with Post Shift coming in second. I had a chance to chat with Jack Hendler this past summer at a Philly Lager beer festival. I lobbied him to provide a greater diversity of brand choices in the Philly area but he just basically smiled at me as his 'response'. Oh well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Cheers!

Maybe Nordic Frost is the dark winter bock?

Could be but I'm hoping that they are separate and that Nordic Frost is a reprise of Lagers of the World: Iceland. Unless plans changed in the last few days, the Springdale post mentioned the bock would be out in the next couple months, while Nordic Frost is slated for late next year. Gotta love some anticipatory speculation.

I’m hoping the beer hall exclusive program takes over a bunch of lines. I would visit a lot more often if 90% of the brews werent always the same core ones I can get (and do) at my corner grocer.

Nordic Frost = Winter Bock, and is a reprise of Lagers of the World: Iceland.

We all loved that beer here, but we also released it in March. Excited to slot it into the right place in our calendar. A pilot batch will be available at the Beer Hall this winter.

Another fun beer I've yet to try is a Black Pils, also in the works for this winter in the beer hall. My colleagues report it's tasty thus far. We've got a new Jack's Abby pilot brewhouse that will be filling the calendar with these sorts of delights throughout 2023, which is all the beer hall exclusive stuff mentioned in our newsletter. I've also heard rumors of certain no-fruit, no-birds brands coming back on a small scale from this system soon. I'll be chuffed if its for real

Hopefully, Nordic Frost would be easier to get than Lagers of the World: Iceland. Any chance that Lagers of the World: Estonia Baltic Porter returns in some form?

That is good news! There are not many beers out there branded as a Black Pils.

I am (was) a fan of Susquehanna Brewing Company's Black Pils they branded as Pils-Noir; I have not seen that beer available for sale in many years. :slight_frown:

"We are pleased to share our innovative black Pilsner, Pils-Noir. Made from Pearl (Winter) barley, malted for us by Munton’s, CaraMalt and Crystal malts, prepared using our unique, husk-free milling process. We then naturally darken the beer using the classic Czech technique of decoction mashing. Hopped with Oregon Willamette, Mt. Hood and Washington hops, and finished with noble Czech Saaz for a fine aroma."

If your Black Pils was available to me I would most definitely buy it.

Excited to try Black Pils not sure I’ve had one of those. Also can’t figure out the brand being referenced, fun mystery for me this afternoon. Need to snag the new LOW Singapore. The only I’ve missed is Japan. Fun mix pack idea LOW 12 unique lagers or wait until you do 24 countries and make it killer.

Well this is even better than I imagined. Not only is it the beer I was hoping for, it's coming out twice! I'll definitely be making the trip to stock up this winter and can't wait to slot it into my holiday beer rotation this time next year.

Also excited to hear that you've added a dedicated pilot line so that we can try new creations without sacrificing the standard lineup.

Back in July Rob Burns (an owner of Night Shift Brewing) posted:

“Given both the immediate and long-term issues at Everett, we've made the decision to move the majority of our beer production to Jack's Abby and IBG.”

How impactful is the production of Night Shift beers at the Jack’s Abby brewery to the schedule of Jack’s Abby branded beers? Does this directly impact the production of certain brands (e.g., Red Tape needed to be cancelled)? Does this directly result in the need for small scale production of specialty brands (e.g., Bohemian Dusk, Nordic Frost)?

    Cheers!

The impact on us as an organization is felt differently by different departments, as you might imagine. My colleagues in production are making us all proud by taking the changes in stride while continuing to keep the highest standards for everything that we brew. I'm probably not the best qualified person to answer this, but since you asked I'll provide my perspective.

Our plans for next year were built by what we felt is right for Jack's Abby Craft Lagers. Changes in the calendar ultimately reflect the result of a collaborative process between departments. For example, choosing whether or not to put Red Tape in the calendar certainly had nothing to do with having to brew something else at that time; sometimes beers need a break, yeah? Plus we all know that we love dunkel and reserve the right to brew it on the small scale next year anyhow.

For a brewery like us, adding pilot batches is complicated and time consuming, so the return is really felt in innovation. Experimenting with cool pooling, sediment tanks and new raw materials is part of designing the future of lager. Plus these beers need names, labels, descriptions and training so that our team can communicate all of our beer geekery to the world. I think you're seeing the result of our having a really well-thought out plan for the year more than anything else.

And on top of all that is a packaging refresh to manage. So, it sure feels like we're taking on more than ever for Jack's in 2023. I'm proud of our team for being able to juggle it all, and more excited than ever for the slate of beers we're working on for next year.

    Anyhow, that's my $.02.
