Hey all. I'm traveling to Jackson next weekend (April 16-18) for a wedding on Friday the 17th. We will be flying out on Saturday evening, is there any place I need to hit for good beer, food, etc.? I would really like to get some great fried chicken or BBQ. Also any bottle shops that are a must-hit while in town or any local stuff that I should try to get my hands on? Thanks in advance for your help. Also, I could probably do an IP trade if anyone is interested in some 14 Darkness, just tossing it out there.
To sweeten the deal, I actually have a bottle of Toppling Goliath's PsuedoSue (bottled 3/30) I could bring as well. Interested in stuff I can't get in MN (obviously)
I live in North MS so not sure about the Jackson bar scene or bottle shops but look for anything by Southern Prohibition especially Mississippi Fire Ant Imperial Red Ale, that stuff is awesome and Hipster Breakfast Oatmeal Stout.
For great BBQ and an impressive local-ish taplist, hit up The Pint & Pint. Some other notables that keep a rotating selection of great taps is Fondren Public (pub food fare) and Saltine (oyster/seafood bar & you won't be disappointed in the PoBoy.) There are really only two legit bottleshops in & around Jackson... Hops & Habanas (they have a location in Madison, MS as well) & LD's Beer Run. You have a good chance at local/seasonal beer at any of the shops or restaurants listed above. The local whalez/limited stuff usually goes pretty quickly as Jackson is thirsty for legit beer.
Also, Lucky Town Brewing is having tours Saturday from 11-3, if you have time to make it. They're on Mill Street, not far from Pig and Pint, Fondren Public, etc. For $10, you get a tour (from me) and 6 half pint pours of their available brews. luckytownbrewing.com
Look for Chandeleur Brewing's Coconut Porter and Yalobusha's Testify, both on tap at Hops in Fondren.
Hope you enjoy your stay here though the weather forecast is not good for the weekend. I agree with the places and beers the others have suggested.
Yes I did enjoy myself, I had incorrectly put that I would be in this past weekend, but it was the previous weekend! Southern hospitality is alive and well, thanks to cvm4! My first crawfish boil, a great wedding with a bluegrass band and a Saturday at Pig & Pint was enough for me, throw in some terrific local brews and it was a winner. Don't know when I'll get back to those parts, but I hope it's not too long!
I am going to be in Jackson, MS December 15th for the night (staying at the Marriot on Amrite). I am flying in from Houston and meeting some customers then taking them to dinner at Parlor Market. Afterwards I will want to hit a few bottle shops to throw some stuff in my luggage before hitting the airport in the morning. Hops & Habanas & LD's Beer Run still the best bet for bottles? What should I look out for local (or stuff thats not distro'd to Texas) thats good?
Southern Prohibition has some good barrel-aged stuff that is being released within the next month or so including BA lazarus and BA fireant. I have a friend that may work at H&H if you'd like me to put you in touch with her then let me know. She'd love to help ya out and may even be interested in a good local-for-local trade.
Yeah, Hops & Habanas in the fondren area & LD's Beer Run are the stops to make. Both shops also offer growler fills and you can even get pours to drink on site. There is probably some overlap in distribution. Most Mississippi breweries, aside from lazy Magnolia, don't distribute out of the state or at most only to TN or LA. Alabama breweries would be worth a look too. Both shops have some social media presence. LD's updates twitter pretty regularly with new releases. And Hops mainly announces through Facebook.
awesome thanks sdeese21 and cvm4. I will definitely hit up both shops if I have time. sdeese21 please dm me on how to contact your friend. I might have a few things I can bring to trade.
