I consistently have Jai Alai in my fridge so I know the beer better than any beer that I drink. That's why I'm wondering if anyone else noticed that the batch with cans dated 6/1/15 tasted more malty than usual and less hop forward with that perfect citrus taste? Maybe I'm crazy but this batch seemed off or at least the six pack I bought on 6/5/15 at Trader Joes is somehow off.

I consider that beer malt forward anyways IMO.

Would like to know why we don't see Jai Alai in Atlanta any more. Used to be stocked at Total but can't find. Easier to find in Alabama right now which strikes me odd. Anyway, yes I think it is a tad malty whenever I am lucky enough to get it.

It's always been a malty IPA

I think it tends to turn into a malt bomb a lot faster than it used to. But that may also be me because I've been drinking so much Crank, that Jai alai isn't a regular purchase anymore.

Maybe I've been drinking too many West Coast IPAs and I've gotten used to less malt and more hops. Still, I drink Jai Alai all the time so I really think that this particular batch was off. I'll pick up another six to see if I'm crazy.

I noticed that too...that it was less Citrusy than usual in that batch. Seems to happen every handful of times I buy Jai Alai like maybe 10%-20% of the time. I still continue to buy it regularly because it's always around whether I'm at Publix or the liquor store and usually is fresh.

Thanks for confirming. I'll also continue to buy it. It's still the best fresh IPA you can buy off the shelf in South Florida.

There was something wrong with the a six pack of 6/13/15 I bought. Wasn't so much malty but sour and vinegar tasting.

Really surprised that CCB is having an issue with quality control. All their beer has been so "spot on" for so long.

The Head Brewer Wayne is from Alabama and he has said on more than one occasion that CCB would make it a priority to ensure that the core brands are avail in AL. That could be why you see it more prevelant in AL than GA.

I had two from 6/1 the other night and they were the standard deliciousness

I am glad to hear that they are taking care of us over here. The single I bought at a bottle shop here was 3 weeks fresh and very tasty. I never see Invasion in GA but find it easy in AL so your post makes sense. Thanks

I think its a reach to say CCB is having an issue with quality control when a couple of guys on BA say there beer was off. If you contact the brewery with your concerns I'm sure they'd be happy to take care of you. And I know they would appreciate hearing if you had an issue. That said, there could be other reasons why the beer you experienced is off including how it was stored at the retailer you bought it from.

To clarify I love Jai Alai and drink way more than I'd like to admit, 2-3 six packs per week. I'm not dissing CCB at all just stating what I experienced. I will continue to buy it and love it. I can generally get it 3 days old so I'm super spoiled. Cheers.

I've said this many times, but in my opinion Jai Alai has possibly the most significant batch variation of any great beer I've ever had.

I may have overstated the situation by saying CCB has a "quality control" issue. That prize should be given to the Funky Buddha Brewery (couldn't resist). You have to admit however that even though only three BA's are saying Jai Alai can be off, we are three BA's that drink a lot of Jai Alai and have a pretty good idea what it should taste like.

Also, the batch I was talking about dated 6/1/15 was only four days old when I drank the first can. It probably went straight on the shelf the day it was delivered and bought by me. There was no time for poor storage by the retailer.

There have definitely been times I have seen variations in Jai Alai. I think it has been more of a variation of the ingredients issue than a QC issue. Can't be easy to buy that much of a specific ingredient that goes into a beer that they are making that much of at once. I really don't drink it too often because as you said it is way to sweet and malty (consistently) for me and I personally think there are much better Florida made IPAs (I'll get to that in a minute). I don't know if its necessarily the recipe changing over the years or my palate changing as I have had the opportunity to drink more IPAs from around the country. Its funny you mention Funky Buddha. I know you mention that in jest but I think they have tweaked a lot of their recipes since ramping up production down in Oakland Park. I think once they find their sweet spot on a recipe for a specific beer they will stick to it. But I could be completely wrong on that.

As far as FL IPA's go, depending where you are in Florida I think Due South with their Category 5 IPA (8.5%) and Cycle with Fixie, Crank and Rickshaw are the best made IPAs in Florida at the moment. I live in south FL so Cat 5 is my regular, go-to IPA. Its ridiculously good. If you haven't had Cat 5 you really need to try it. And if you are outside of their distro I'd be happy to send anyone (up to a few people) a 4 pack if you email me a label. Hit me with a PM if interested.

Thanks for the offer. I live 10 miles away from Due South so no need to send me some Cat 5. I'm sure other BAs would appreciate it.
