Noticed some curious, tan-colored floaties in my Jai Alai today. Are we calling this yeast, protein, or what?

I've heard of them, but never seen 'em. What vintage/stamp on the can is it?

Dated 9/11. The flavor isn't drastically different, but there is something noticeable. Maybe just the power of suggestion.

We're pretty sure the 9/11 batch floaties are just yeast and maybe some hop debris. We had some issues for awhile with Jai Alai and the centrifuge we use to spin the yeast out causing a protein complex to precipitate out in big chunks. We made some process changes back in mid August that we are confident have solved that issue so I don't think that is what people are seeing in this batch. I've also checked all of the cans I have here in our "beer library" and they are all fine so it wasn't a batch-wide problem like the protein chunks are.

We don't filter any of our beers post centrifugation as many breweries do so my best guess is that the centrifuge had a hiccup and let too much yeast and trub through. When that happens the sediment will settle out in the brite tank and may get pulled into the canning line during a run, usually towards the end. This results in a few cases of cans that have an excess amount of yeast in there. Thankfully it doesn't happen too often these days. It's also harmless and won't hurt you to drink it.

We're making every effort to ensure that what we send out is the best it can be, hopefully the next time you try Jai Alai or any of our beers it'll be as we intended it to be.

    Cheers!

I had a can of Sept. 5 last night that got mixed in with some others, tasted every bit as good as the October 8th I had after it.

I had a sixer of 9/11 a couple of weeks ago and noticed nothing in the pour. I use a nonic for my Jai Alai.

If it's more than 3 days old, I'm not touching it.

I kinda miss the Jai Alai floaties from a few months back. Now it just looks like any other IPA. :slight_frown:

I LOVE FLOATIES! I can't say that enough. I also like pulp in my OJ. The other day I had a Tocobaga that was full of floaties. Amazing as always! Is the word "floatie" the official term for these particles?

I guess my feeling about floaties is somewhat ambivalent.

From a brewer's perspective, I would prefer a clearer beer because that is almost always attainable and it makes for a more "attractive" product.

From a consumer's perspective, I just want it to taste good. And Jai Alai has that in spades.
