Pours a clear light gold with a brief, fizzy head that vanishes completely. From my perspective (favoring NEIPAs, DIPAs, and Imperial Stouts) this was not a promising start. However, this beer (IS it a beer??) was a pleasant surprise. Tart lime, sweet, easy to drink, and a clean, dry finish. I was prepared for a drain pour on this one, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. Expanded my horizons for sure.
Poured at fridge temp. Pours a transparent yellow with a little bit of white head. Lots of bubbles throughout. Nose is grassy, lemon zest, leather, and a bit of pine needles. The taste is nice and follows the nose. Lemon, sour patch kids, wheat, and bread. Super smooth. Mildly sour - a great level for this beer. I really like this one! It's nicely refreshing. Was a bit surprised that the ABV was so high. Doesn't drink like that. Mouthfeel is light and crisp. Overall, this is a fantastic sour. look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75
This brewery had a good showing in last year's EBF, and this one was quite good as well. The fruits used gave me a lemon-lime vibe (as seems to be the consensus here) and it was nicely tart. Some firm crackery malt for the fruit to work over for a super dry and refreshing beer. A fun beer for sure 4.03/5 rDev +4.9% look: 3.75 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.25
Interesting. Part sour, part gose, part saison, part pilsner. Oak lends a lot of complexity to balance the styles here. This one will do well across various palates.
Perfect balance of booziness, tartness, complemented by the additions of Yuzu, Buddha's Hand and Sudachi. I have no complaints about this beer. Perfectly executed, delicate and delicious.
Japas never disappoints when it comes to creativity and unusual ingredients. The flavors are amazing. I never heard of any of the ingredients, so I Googled them… Balsamo wood = Peruvian Balsam (sap is used in perfume). Yuzu is an aromatic citrus fruit that tastes like a mix of grapefruit and tangerine. Buddah’s hand is an archaic citrone, similar to lemon zest. Sudachi is a lime-like fruit. A Caipirinha is a Brazilian mixed drink with a liquor similar to Rum, lime juice, and cane sugar.
Meh. Well enough made, but not very interesting. After last year's mind-blowing "Black Miso" I was jazzed to hold off on savoring this one, the 9th for me out of this box. Just nothing to distinguish it from multitudes of sour ales. Disappointed.
As I also wondered. Balsamo wood aged, but nothing about tequila barrels. If it HAD some tequila undertones I might have found it more appealing, and interesting.
Having learned to post my impressions before reading anyone else's I'm still a little surprised at being a lonely outlier here. I've enjoyed scores of more interesting sour beers than this one, but it is certainly not bad by any stretch, just uninspiring. Not "extreme" in my experience.
Look: Crystal clear gold. Aggressive pour yielded a frothy white billowy head at first but dissipated quickly to no head. Smell: Cat pee and white wine. Some floral notes. Taste: Dry white wine. Sour. Cool feeling of alcohol evaporation in mouth. White grape. Puckering. Feel: Thin body. I want to say low carbonation but I do pour aggressively. Overall: If white wine is your thing, you might enjoy this. I’m not a big white wine fan in general.
Now for something completely different. I am not familiar with these fruits nor with a Caipirinha so I went into this one quite blind. I would love to taste this again after getting some reference points but as it is, it was like a journey into the wild. Really interesting flavors that are close to lemon-lime and Tequila but not quite any of those things. Very pleased to find this in the selection.
Totally agree with this. It tastes like a basic sour. I mean it's extreme in the sense of the ingredients but that's all.
Which number were we on? Probably not too much to say about it, but I enjoyed it. I am not familiar enough with the ingredients, nor the actual drink it has inspired, and yet I feel like it's true to form. It just feels like a cocktail in some way. Unlocking some primal memory of the last caipirnha, perhaps, haha. I would also like to try this again after having the real thing. It's quite overtly lemon-lime in flavor, but then you sense the other things underneath it. The beer reminds me of a tart wine I once had, but with a beer undertaste. Really enjoy the creativity.
I am really liking this. It has a mild lemon lime flavor with a moderate tart taste. It is delicate in the blend of flavors although I have no idea what the individual fruits would taste like. This sour is very well done and captures what I believe is the essence behind the Extreme Beer Box. A four pack or two would definitely follow me home if I ever found it in my local beer emporium!
