The lady picked a couple off the shelf this weekend from a US chain store called Total Wine (and More!). We saw that they were brewed in Scotland so were immediately curious, but the brewery is listed as JBW 77. I have since come to find out that this is actually a Brewdog production. What gives? Surely they are proud enough of themselves that they would put their own name on anything they make?
Have any of you tried these, and what did you think?

These are the two in question

I've shopped in Total wine a few times and think I remember seeing these back in May?

They do it over here too

Tesco, who I'm sure you may have heard of, are the largest supermarket chain here and the Tesco American Double IPA is in fact Brewdogs Hardcore IPA!

Brewdog do a lager called 77

That must be something relevant to the brewery I guess

Also James Watt is the name of one of the founders so James B Watt 77???

JBW- James Bruce Watt- Ruds is right on the money. Not sure about the 77 though...

Just looked up my review on this beer and generously gave it a 3.5
    "
I'm not a regular lager drinker so didn't really know what to expect but to me it resembled a light mild rather than any lager I've sampled. The malt profile seems all wrong as if it's brewed from pale ale malt. It's difficult to grade it-should I assess it as a pleasant enough beer or what? Had it been a 3.5% light mild it would have earned more points but like all Brewdog beers I've sampled it fights well below its weight. But then so do most lagers anyway so we're back to square 1."

I have a recollection of seeing at least one of these for sale in Brewdog's online shop some time back. The accompanying blurb said something about it (them) being brewed for a US chain store (quite possibly total wine, I can't remember). The impression I took from this was that the store controlled the branding of the bottles - hence why they look different from all Brewdog's other products and don't mention the brewery. However, I could be wrong. Perhaps a google search would turn up more info.

Inspector Ruds scratched that into and out of his notebook hours ago

The Brew Dog founders were in their early 20's 4 or 5 years ago when they set up

Reckon they were born in '84/5/6

Unless of course it was 7th July - longer shot. I was dismissing 1977.

'77 was the year punk broke in the UK with the release of Never Mind the Bollocks. I'd wager it's something to do with that, desperate bastards that Brewdog are.

The site for a Welsh bottle shop lists these as BrewDog beers as well.

Sex Pistols is probably the only punk music he's (i.e. the Brewdog guy) ever heard.

Yeah, but The Damned have neither the mythology nor popular culture cache that the Sex Pistols have. In commercial terms, the Sex Pistols broke punk.

And if you said "Captain Sensible" to Brewdog they'd likely gawp at you.

And they would be oblivious of how 'Malcolm McLaren' they are.

I don't know how I somehow remembered this was Welsh. Apparently they're in Canterbury.

It's listed under stouts as BrewDog Old World Imperial Stout. Probably a somewhat rare commodity now, they do cheapy post order apparently. Don't let it deter you from your Southampton trip!!! :grinning:

Just guessing here, but one possibility is the JBW 77 listing is part of a larger business plan to establish multiple "brands" of beers coming out of Brewdog's brewing facilities.

JBW (77) is an Aberdeen-based company that appears to be at least partly owned by Watt. There is some evidence suggesting that Brewdog Bars Limited leases one or more of their bars from JBW (77). Watt has or had a majority ownership of Brewdog itself. Notice also that the labels and naming conventions for the two beers you link to are stylistically different than the Brewdog line up posted on their web page.

The JBW 77 beers were brewed at Brewdog for Total Wine in the US. Brewdog didn't use their own name so as not to infringe existing US supply contracts. The Old World Russian Imperial Stout is Riptide. Can't remember what the IPA was, though it does reuse the artwork for Atlantic IPA.

Thanks all. Very informative, and a nice primer on the beginnings of punk music in the UK.
