Speaking as a Texan, these guys are fighting the good fight as far as our laws are concerned and pumping out amazing brews. Pretty awesome write up, check out some of the threads concerning JK in the regional forum for more info, but they are active in the BA community and are extremely responsive to questions.

Nice read, and JK is one of the reasons I love living in Austin, but I don't think it's entirely accurate to say that Commercial Suicide "failed". For sure, it didn't sell as much as their other beers but it sold. When they switched from English ale yeast to their own cultured yeast CS was the one beer that proved more difficult to brew (Jeff did explain some of the reasons to me but it mostly went over my head), but they're still working on it and hope to have CS back in the lineup at some point.

More power to their elbow for that and for all their superb beers.

Edit: The guy with the beard, btw, designs all their labels http://jesterkingbrewery.com/beers/

Good to see JK getting their due. Texas restrictions on brewers are ludicrous and outdated, and JK is leading the fight to change them. And while I havent loved everything they make, I appreciate the effort they make to create interesting, non-typical beers, and I will continue to support them because of this (I have a bottle of every beer they make in my fridge right now, except the Commercial Suicide)

Jester King is not leading the fight, they just seem to get the most press. They are doing a lot of good don't get me wrong, but Saint Arnold has been doing the same things for over a decade (they even sued TABC about a decade before Jester King did). They are bringing to light the riduculus permit fees that keep some of the more "artisan" breweries from coming to Texas, which is something not a lot of other State brewers have focused on so much.

That is an interesting article. A year ago, I enjoyed some of Jester King`s beers while in Austin. And you gotta love the name of that mag, Garden & Gun. Not a title that I have seen or would expect to see in New England.

The font of the magazine makes it blend in a little more; making it more Conde Nast-esque...

Isn't press exactly what the fights against probitive laws need? Stone has succeeded in many similar ways with their fight over 'Russian' imperial stout. That said, current Texas staples like Saint Arnold no doubt paved the way. But credit is paid where it is due and I'm proud to say JK and Saint Arnold both played a great role is me joining the BA ranks

No doubt, I am not trying to take away from what Jester King is doing. Though it seems to me, with talking to people in and around Houston, and on this site that people think Jester King are the only guys "fighting the good fight." When it reality it is JK, SA, Real Ale, Freetail, etc that are doing a bunch of legal batteling in the courts of law. Jester King seems to be more visibal right now, which is a great thing. Just not even close to the whole story.

The entire Texas craft brew scene is better with JesterKing around, both for their beers and their efforts against draconian TABC laws and regs. I salute them!

Someone's got to say this, it might as well be me.

The TABC don't make the laws and regs, they're the body which enforces them. The Texas legislature makes the rules. The TABC are no angels but they're the cops not the lawmakers. Jester King et al managed to get some of the more ridiculous rules overturned in court because they were unconstitutional; what was left alone by the judge will have to be challenged in Congress. Jester King won't be the only Texas brewer lining up for that gig, along with Open the Taps.
