You used to be able to get bottles of Boxer's around Austin. Wasn't uncommon at all.

And for the record, double digit ABV sours are the shit!!!

Yeah, you're both right. Either scenario can happen in this market so...I hope JK keeps their options open. Of course it's not likely that locals will stop buying any time soon. Just pointing out that competition is growing. And with the "new shiny toy" mentality so many beer drinkers seem to have, it could happen rather quickly.

The only difference in toys is JK has the market cornered on Tx sours.

    For now.

Again, I'm not saying things will change. I'm just saying that the way the market is, prepare for anything.

Not saying I agree or disagree but I've also had people tell me they can buy xyz beer on the secondary and trade that beer for those "rar whalez" without having to spend an entire weekend and money on hotels, gas, etc. Just saying there are more economical options for some people.

    So how's this new blend?

So much talk about stupid distribution/membership club stuff in here- I want to know how the beer tastes.

I'm curious too. This batch should be quite a bit different from past batches considering how long some of the beer has been sitting and the fact that they didn't age any on whiskey barrels this time.

Apologies for being so stupid, why don't you drive to your local brewery and let us know.

    Edit: I truly am curious.

To answer the question about tastes.

Carb was good, but the change in barrels leaves a noticeable taste change. I felt the whiskey barrels added a sour apple note whereas this blend has a distinctive white wine flavor (as I understand they used neutral wine barrels for this one). Regardless I was happy to buy my allotment on a wonderful Friday at JK.

Back to the beer. We went out on Saturday, just after opening, and I was shocked (and ecstatic) by how quiet it was. The weather was gorgeous, and it was awesome to just sit and relax, with no bottle or tap lines to speak of.

(L-R) Boxers, Sin Frontera on cask with lemon peels, and Coquetier.

Boxers was awesome - probably my favorite batch. Had a nice oakiness to it, and tremendous body. Sin Frontera was really good as well, especially as it warmed, but my favorite of the day was Coquetier. I didn't know what to expect with that flavor profile, but man I really liked it - fruity, tart, and just overall very pleasant.

I heard a few people say "I'm not going to JK this weekend because they don't have any good beers for sale right now." Dumbasses. They always have good beer

This response isn't meant to be argumentative. I just wanted to point out that we have been actively working on breaking down some of the barriers that keep many great wild/sour beers out of Texas, and we'll continue to do so. We want to see the overall category of good beers fermented with microorganisms beyond the realm of cultured brewers yeast grow and grow. For instance, I can say with confidence that no one was more happy than us when Jolly Pumpkin entered the Texas market. We'll continue to work at trying to reduce/eliminate the high licensing fees in Texas that keep beer from many small, artisan breweries out of our state, and we'll continue to provide a platform at our tasting room for people to experience beer from some of our favorite makers of farmhouse and wild ales. - Jeff

Not taken as an argumentative response at all. I should clarify my statement as, y'all produce the most sought after sours that are produced in Tx. I would even say, JK has the most sought after beers brewed in the state of Tx. Just keep on brewing good beer.

I visited Sunday and can pile on the love for the latest few beers + non-fruited sour weekends. By most normal measures, you'd say there were "a lot" of people there, but no lines. Coquetier was the star for me, but Boxer's was also really good and I picked up a few of both. My pour of Sin Frontera was pretty warm and just couldn't quite compare to the other two, but I still liked it quite a bit.

Coquetier was the one I was least interested in driving down but I wholeheartedly agree...just outstanding

From talking to beer people in the CM/HEB chain in DFW at the time, none of the stores reported strong sales of the other beers JK continued to ship up (Le Petit Prince, Wytchmaker and Noble King) so if they weren't generating the sales it wasn't good business sense to keep underperforming products on display when they could stock something that moved better. I don't know how much of that is true versus employee grumbling but it came across to me less as a sense of entitlement and more of a need to stock merchandise that sells.
