^^^ This. Most folks have people hounding them to trade away any extras immediately after the initial release (at least I do). So its really hard to get them to trade any that they may be saving for themselves.

Also, as stated by others above, be conscious of the bottle count on each release & the per person limit. Earlier this year, the per person limits were higher at times. Supply should be better on those. Lately, everything desirable is 1 per person per day & sells out insanely fast. So that will play a factor into how someone values their stock too. Past Friday release of duBois sold out mid-Saturday. So there are people here in Austin that are trading to get it because they didn't make it out there fast enough.

I traded Darkness 14 a week after it came out (when value was high) for O&P + AL and my trade partner "threw in" a C5.

Now I'm offering up Assassin and I'm getting told, "I can do 2 sours + a 750 of their shelf saison."

    What gives?

I figured Assassin would pull like 6 sours given that Darkness did 3 and Assassin >>>> Darkness.

What happened is that you found someone who WAY overpaid you for that Darkness. (opinion, feel free to disagree)

As JK beers become all 1-per person, it will be harder to trade for them. I used to be able to go a few times and end up with 6-8 of anything, and now I have to trade for some of them myself with other local guys just because they're so limited and sell out fast (and its a 75-90 minute drive for me to get there, each way, so it gets harder and harder to justify half my day for 1 bottle of something, let alone more than 1)

Yeah, they were super generous for the Darkness...in most cases that will have a hard time pulling more than just one JK sour.

I've heard of DB Huna pulling 6 sours and that actually getting done but Assassin will likely be closer to 4 sours.

trade #1 - guy willingly got robbed
trade #2 - pretty close to fair IMO, depending on which 2 sours we're talking about (for example, MvB+CdT and a 750 saison is a very good deal for Assassin)

I appreciate the responses. I guess I'll go thank my original trade partner again for that. I included Surly Pentagram and he included some of the 750's also so it wasn't just 3:1 but I thought we worked out a fair trade at that time. He explained that the sours were brewery only and I explained that I slept on a sidewalk for darkness and it seemed fair to the two of us.

I can't imagine Darkness going for only 1 sour, I'll keep my Darkness if that's the going rate.

I saw Assassin pull 4 Darkness yesterday, so there's also that.

That seems reasonable. I'm not looking for the rarest of rares, just enjoy drinking their stuff so it's always welcome in my cellar. IMO the Saisons are not nearly as good as the sours, I wouldn't count those as anything more than shelf filler in my trades. I've had Kolloab, Das Wunder, and Le Petite Prince and I'll be fine without them in my life.

I would also say that @lonewolfcry was being overly generous to get the bottles he desired for another BA'er! I wouldn't expect 4 darkness and a 4 pack of Bcbs for an Assassin! And if you knew Jim(don't know if you do) he's a very generous guy!

What would be a fair ratio of JK Fruits for a HF Aaron?

I imagine you'll get a very varied bunch of responses, as Aaron went for as much as Assassin 1:1 to significantly less than that from what I remember. I personally didn't hold mine hostage and flipped it to a buddy for a AB Black Magic Panther.

I think 1:2 (Aaron:JK sours) is probably a very close baseline.

I've traded 2 Aarons for jester king 500ml sours. One went 4:1 and the other 6:1 (I added a couple framinghammer variants for those). So far I've averaged 5:1.. Probably high but I figured Id share.

I've come to the conclusion there is a little bit of price fixing going on by lots of people (naturally the Texas folk with access) posting on any reasonable trade request saying the offers are way off (needing to add more for JK beers); which is what I have a problem with. This means anyone searching sees nothing but failed/flamed posts. What I don't have a problem with is that the real driving force is simple supply and demand. I traded for 5 of them (at a reasonable value) and really enjoyed 2, the other three were good and interesting but I wouldn't be pursuing many more. I may have been lucky and got a deal, but I think I was just lucky to find another reasonable trader. The only solution is to either pony up, or wait and hope JK production goes way up to meet demand. I swear I will see a FT: Atrial ISO: DBH any day now lol.

I really enjoy trying new things but for me often the sought after beers don't live up to the hype, though usually still good and worth a try. 9 times out of 10 I should have just picked up another supplication to enjoy my evening. I am sure non CA folk were in the same position a few years back when RR sours weren't as easy to nab. Sucks to have to pack it in and drink local (always) but there is plenty of great beer out there.

as always, it boils down to building relationships and establishing great, regular trading partners. I have the entire 500ml JK sours lineup (some multiples), and they've never cost me anything more than $16 worth of quality beer in return, oftentimes top-rated locals from my neck of the woods

that being said, I think 6, or even 4 JK sours for Aaron is highway robbery and I'd never pay it (I've drank Aaron, it was great, but certainly not $64+ of awesome beer great).

Agree with you on the threadshitting...it's annoying but isn't exclusive to TX JK traders. The toughest thing is all JKs for the foreseeable future have gone to 1 per person so, although you'll have a few people who keep going and have a big haul on that release when it's all said and done, most people will only have a few. So, by asking for so much quantity in one trade, you're basically talking to a small audience who most likely is heavy enough into the beer scene that they either have or have had most or all of the Bruery lineup. That's why I would suggest splitting up your trade into two or three smaller trades to get what you want. Big trades are tough to pull off most of the time.

After seeing this post I went back to my previous JK trader and thanked him for being the only Texan not trying to trade a ransom for 500ml of beer.

He said, "Have you heard about JK's new Bière de Blanc du Bois? I can send you one if you send me a 4 pack of Abrasive."

So they're not all bad, just gotta find the right one!

First off, ouch, but I agree with other posters that its not just us Texans. Anybody in a market with anything desirable has folks that do that. I tend to chime in only in defense of how much harder it has become to get JK stuff. I do usually try to stay out of arguments about amount because everyones situation is different.

+1 : Try to find a regular trading partner
+1 : Trying to nab the 500mL in smaller trades.

Good luck & dont mess with Texas!
