Has anyone else noticed a vast improvement in the selection at Jewel lately? Our local store is undergoing renovations and the beer selection seems to have grown in the process. Since the change is recent, a lot of the dating is really good and fresh. I don't anticipate that lasting though...

Every store is different from what I've noticed, at least out here in the suburbs

Certainly better, but far from great. The Jewel by me (Gurnee) is on par with the Mariano's by me.

Did you happen to be there for the BCBS fiasco this past year?

Mine in St Charles is pretty meh but it is an older store.

I'm familiar with that store too -- it's my one source for Trumer Pils anywhere in Lake County. Beyond that, they seem to be one of the few retailers carrying the Urban Chestnut line.

But as mychalg9 says, every store seems to have a different selection -- between Gurnee, Grayslake, and Round Lake there seems to be great variance. Nonetheless, you can always seem to find good stuff as long as you aren't looking for something specific.

I was not there I live near O'hare but my girlfriend lives in Gurnee/Grayslake so I frequently shop at that Jewel and she called me while I was waiting in line for BCBS at a mom and pop shop on a Sunday because I worked on black Friday. She said that the manager forgot to put the BCBS on the shelves/floor on Friday and had cases stacked on top of each other in the front and back of the store like it was bud light. Needless to say she was able to get me my first whole case of BCBS and have never heard the end of how she is the better beer hunter hahaha

There are Jewels in Chicago that put it out in stacks like that as well.

I just thought it was interesting that the selection increased (nearly doubled) along with the renovations. The cooler and liquor/beer section shelving has been expanded so it had to be filled with something. Glad they decided to fill it with beer that I like!

The Grayslake Jewel had it on display at the front of the store alongside all the other "seasonal" beers, but by the time a co-worker decided he really wanted some -- a couple days after the release -- it was completely gone.

I can't honestly recall, but I think they only had 2 or 3 of the variations in Grayslake.

Sounds like there's been a bigger renovation at your Jewel. The stores in our area expanded a while ago -- to the same appreciation, at least in my opinion.

Really? You shouldn't have any trouble finding relatively fresh Trumer all over the place out here (at least near southern Lake County, anyway). I can tell you for a fact the LZ Binny's always stocks it.

The Jewel in Carol Stream/Bloomingdale is fantastic! I knew I should have taken a picture this morning. Old Rasputin is on sale.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind when I'm down that way. But yeah, it's hard to find up here and it's just about my favorite Pils anymore.

They did expand the selection of beers a good bit at the one near me a few years ago(Clark/Ashland), when the store got a renovation. Used to be 2 tiny aisles, so I'm very thankful they widened it to 3 aisles. Still, the selection at the Lawrence/Ravenswood Mariano's is slightly better.

The Glen Ellyn store has craft and a build your own six pack but is across the street from Binny's. The Wheaton Danada beer selection has become meh. I think Jewel/Osco has tried to sell more craft, but doesn't monitor it enough to keep it fresh.

That is my concern, that the influx of new items brought some fairly fresh dating. Over time I expect that to subside...

Wait -- you can buy beer in Wheaton now? When did I miss that legislation? :grinning:
