Very interesting range of reactions on this one. Normally any new release from Otter Creek in the last year or so would be an automatic buy for me and Jack's Abby is my favorite MA brewery. So this should be a lock but what I'm reading here are some odd notes for a Pilsner, even one described as "nouveau." I'd be inclined to try a single first, more so if If I see it at $12 per 6.

 

Must say I did not get any smoke. Granted that was one can last week. I'll have to try another though

 

I'm glad to see others getting the weird smoke notes when drinking from the can, thought it was just me.

 

Got smoke. I agree, a strange one- but I like it.

 

I had high hopes for this. Sigh...

 

I got smoke and vegetal notes. Did not like. Oh well.

 

I had it on tap yesterday and thought it was great. Light like a pilsner but the flavors were closer to new pale ales. I did not a get a hint of smoke or vegetable. Best thing brewed at Otter Creek that I've had.

 

I've had half of the 6-pack I grabbed so far. I have poured it into glass, so take this with that grain of salt - I did not get any hint of smoke or metallic. It poured out with a ton of hop aroma, and that's what dominated the flavor. Personally, I would have preferred a touch of sweet malt cutting through, but i'm not going to knock them for it - I presume this is what they wanted to brew.

 

No smoke in the sixer I had.

 

Had on tap last night in RI. Tasted like some randalized it through smoke and bandaids. Not sure what happened. Bummer for sure since I'm a fan of both breweries.

 

Checking in to confirm some smokiness. Poured from can and splitting with a friend. Seems phenolic and vaguely horse-y. Wonder what's up with that.

edit: before anyone asks, we were tasting smoke before I came to this thread haha. No confirmation bias here.

 

Collabs disappoint more than impress.

 

Picked up a sixer earlier today. No smoke over here. Very tasty, although more like JA's typical hoppy lagers than a pilsner.

 

It's not bad, but something does seem a little off. I can see where people are getting smoky and vegetal from. What is it though? DMS? Phenols? Or just the hops? Personally, I thought they'd be more fruit forward.

 

Agreed. Aside from beer+coffee collaborations, the only one I can recall liking was Double Dose.

 

I drank a second can and really tried to ::imagine:: I was drinking a pils. Interesting exercise, and you can almost make it work. I think the phenolic flavors may just be the hops playing some tricks on my palate. Here are some fact sheets for the hop varieties for those interested:

With the stuff OCB is putting out now .. Why is anyone surprised with the "smoke" taste

 

My first impression was that it had a lot of potential, but was a little heavy on the smoked malt, which took me out of the experience a bit. I'm almost positive it's smoked malt. A bit strange.

 

6er. Mine is missing 2 beers! It was 9.99 OTD. Are these 4 packs or 6 packs?
