Unless my run of bad luck continues ill be on vacation in Michigan for a weekend next month and i am hoping to come home with some Michigan goodies! Depending on where i stay ill be at Shorts and Founders on the way home but as far as going to bottle shops im curious as to what ill find from both of these guys.

Anything good or should i not bother?

    Thanks and cheers!

For Kuhnhenn stuff you'll have to go to the brewery or the better shops in the Detroit area because their releases are very small and usually don't reach the west side of Michigan. JP stuff can be found at any good bottle shop statewide. I don't track either brewery to know what is upcoming for their releases, so somebody else will have to chime in about that.

For Kuhnhenn, bottle availability even at the brewery is pretty limited. However, you can usually get a lot of their stuff in growlers if you stop by.

Yeah if your looking for bottles at this point you may actually have a better chance finding them at the bottle shops.

And all their beer isnt bottled. What you will find in bottles around would be 4d, Braggot, 9 maybe and maybe dark heathen. Thats all Ive ever seen.

If you're staying near Shorts, you'll be close to my place. You won't find any Kuhnhenn anywhere around here, but I have some Braggot and a Prometheus to trade if you're interested. Jolly Pumpkin is available just about everywhere, but the pub outside of Traverse City will have the best selection.

I was at International Beverage in Grand Rapids (on East Paris) last week, they had a bunch of Kuhnhenn Braggot. IB is one of my favorite bottle shops around here in GR. Braggot isn't my thing, and is expensive, but they did have 12-15 bottles sitting out (I think they were around $8-$12 for a small 12 oz or so bottle).

This saturday is a party @ Kuhnhenn. It'll be pretty busy but if you're coming after that there might be some stuff available in bottles. Unfortunately it won't be what they're known for (4d, bb4d, bbbw, eisbock etc). Fortunately there should be some new interesting meads and dark beers released

Im thinking ill be in TC. So ill def make a stop at Shorts. Ill stop at a few shops on the way and hope to find some 4d.

Though i like the idea of a trade...ill be visiting Michigan for my 2 year anniversary with my girlfriend. Ill be visiting Shorts and Jp (and founders and Greenbush ..and hopefully the livery on the way back) so i have to pass on the trade. But thank you very much! Beer advocacy at its finest.

A question regarding JP in TC. I checked their menu online for TC and it shows they have 2 beers on tap and only 2 for sale to go. Is it not up to date or is this a real small place? I have no problem getting my first La Roja or anything or some cool swag but it would have been nice to have more of a selection

I checked again...do they not update the tap list and bottle menu with rotating beers and just leave their year round beers on there?

Ive never been there but I cant ever find what they have on tap at the Ann Arbor pub either. I think unless they announce a release that's going to be on tap you just get what you get. If its anything like the Ann Arbor one they should at least have most of their or regular release stuff on tap.

    No worries.

As for the JP TC pub, don't go by what they have on their site. They have 2-3 JP on tap (usually Bam Bier, Bam Noir, and Cala). They will have 5-10 North Peak beers on tap which are never on their site. Usually it's all stuff available in bottles, but occasionally will have a tap-only North Peak beer. They will have pretty much all JP and NP bottles available though. It's a nice place, a BEAUTIFUL drive out to it, and their food is very good (I usually get the cheesy BLT w/ truffle fries). I don't know if you or your gf like wine, but you could do a small wine tour on the way out if you wanted. I'm not huge into wine, and even I really enjoy doing a wine tour from time to time.

If you need any other TC suggestions, let me know, and congrats on the anniversary!

    Awesome! Thank you very much!

I assume they have regular JP merch as well?

And she likes wine more than beer....but she doesnt really like naything complex. Barefoot Moscato is one of her favorites. I dont drink wine really except at a winery in a mall ive been too but it was actually pretty decent and enjoyable just from being able to pick up certain flavors.

Some JP merch, but a whole lot of North Peak merch (which is cool in it's own right). Best JP merch they have is a goblet (LOVE mine).

Don't let my critiques sway you from going there, it's an awesome spot. One of my favorites in the area, actually. If your gf is up to it, you should swing past The Filling Station and Right Brain too, just because neither distribute. 7 Monks is also great (and also has great food), but in the end it's a bar (just one with 42 craft taps).

The trip to JP in TC is worth it if for no other reason than the white pizza. Phenomenal pie.

As stated above, bottling from Kuhnhenns is extremely limited on shelves. You can stop in at Holiday Market in Royal Oak to pick up our last bottle of Braggot.....sadly that is all we have Kuhnhenn-wise as of now.
