I was thinking: How cool would it be if we each had the ability to create a journal on BA to keep a running diary of our lives with beer. That way, not only reviews and ratings but purchases, experiences with friends, bars, bottle shops, beer fests as well as just thoughts about beer could be kept in one place. There could be an option to subscribe to another BA's journal or another option to keep your journal private. I think this would be an awesome way to say something about beer that maybe was not quite interesting enough to post in the forums.

    Imagine something like this:

Dec 28th 2013: Had my first Bourbon County Barleywine, which might be the best beer I have ever tasted. Here is my review: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1549/100421/?ba=fx20736

Dec 27th 2013: have to remember to review Southern Tier 2XMAS. I have 5 bottles in the basement. Currently stuck on 298 reviews, I'll be glad to get past the 300 reviews barrier.

Dec 26th 2013: in honor of Boxing Day I had two Sam Smith's beers; Yorkshire Stingo and Taddy Porter. Unfortunately neither excited me very much this time.

Dec 25th 2013: only drank 2 beers on Christmas due to the wine and egg nog. Had a lovely 2009 Fuller's Vintage Ale and my last Gale's Old Prize Ale, this one from 2002. The Gale's is awesome when it hasn't turned bad but my luck has not been so good with the last few bottles, with corking issues or beer that tastes like vinegar. I can't see myself buying this beer again. The Fuller's Vintage OTOH is just great beer.

and so on, that gives you an idea of how I see a journal being used.

Given how much trouble is being caused by the current amount of traffic and a shortage of storage space on this site I don't think you'll see it. Even if only because it would cost the site a lot of time and money.

But you could set up something pretty much the same for yourself and others by creating a blog, posting the blog link on your personal profile page and then letting all BAs have access. That way you and others would get the effect you want and it wouldn't cost the site much overhead in increased traffic and storage costs that impact the performance of the site causing slow-downs and outages of service.

Adding a feature like this wouldn't impact traffic (which is being resolved), and we have more storage space than we know what to do with (and soon we'll have even more). It's not about time and money either.

It basically comes down to: This is the first request since 1996 for such a feature. We'd need a hell of a lot of demand to even consider it.

On a side note: We already have the ability to do something similar to this on member profile pages (basically Facebook-like status, that you can reply to and follow), but we disabled it as there was too much non-beer talk and other nonsense.

    Todd,

    Thanks for jumping in.

This whole idea just came to me and I thought it might be a nice feature for those who live on BA but sometimes feel like they shouldn't post because the topic was well trodden or for fear that there would be little or no response to a post. I feel that exploring Craft Beer is a journey and it would be nice to be able to keep a record of it.

This is actually a really nice idea. I can't imagine myself using it much, but I could imagine other people finding it useful and fun. Count me in for a " yes."

    Cheers,
    Jeff

This seems very unnecessary to me.

I think it would be kind of interesting, especially for the traveler BAs, maybe a beer road trip log or something like that.
