And I need some help. It was listed on Craigslist for $30 but it didn't cool down. I went to check it out, and it had a tap (spigot) and the connection for a 1/2 barrel keg. I thought if anything, those parts are worth the money so I bought it, took it to my local hackerspace and examined it closer.

The college kid who sold it to me said it stopped cooling down. We plugged it in, and the coil is not getting cold. He said it may just need a recharge. The thing looks old, and its possible. One of the wiring diagrams was from 1986 and there was a second one from 1996. (These were in the manual he gave me) he said his uncle gave it to him.

It has a stainless steel top with a drip tray, tack welded down. Its a one keg system. It has wood grain contact paper affixed to the outside. It appears that the sides are constructed out of MDF, but I haven't investigated that closely. The thing also has some leaks, as the inside has some caulk, and spray paint there.

The modelsl numbers on the manual said DD GM and two others but not sure. It was a catch all manual for the machine.

What I would like to know, 1.) What is the model? 2) is it worth restoring? 3) if its just a bad compressor, can I swap it out with one from a dorm fridge?

My brother and I are brewing our own beer, and we've talked about kegging. It was dumb luck that this showed up and I bought it. We plan on using corny kegs, as we only brew 5 gallons at a time.

There is plenty of room inside this unit to get two corny kegs plus a CO2. I've already started looking for a way to put a second tap on the riser. We could eaisly get this done.

for the investment of $30 and some elbow grease it may be worth it. If you have to replace the coil and other cooling parts that could get expensive. It may jsut be money better spent to buy a new or slightly used Kegerator. Let us know how it works out and if it does post pics

Sorry noob question, but how do you post pics? Could be I don't have enough posts.

I pulled apart the faucet last night and I'm in the process of cleaning it real well. The bad news is that I've got the unit stored at the hackerspace, so I can't work on it nightly like I want to.

I may make the small investment of taking to get the coolant lines checked out and filled up with freon. Hopefully that is all that is wrong with it.

Did you check if the fan is even spinning? The cheapest, easiest and most likely issue. After that, it gets more complicated.

The fan issue could be the following simple fixes, or a new fan is needed:
    - fan is touching fan shroud. Fan shroud are often a cardboard like material and warp and touch the fan, which is easy to stop from spinning.
    - fan is very dirty/grimy and needs a cleaning so it can spin again.
    - fan is shot
