Curious what the going rate for CO2 is nowadays? I just went to a LHBS and got charged $32 to fill, not swap, a 10lb CO2 tank. I know I have filled there before and it was a lot less. The 5lb is $16 to refill which is ok'ish by me. My understanding that a big part of the cost is labor and not the actual gas. Just for grins I called an Airgas in the area and they charge $22 or so to swap out a 10lb CO2 tank. I had a chat with the person that did the filling. Unfortunately, I would not have had it filled by them had I known they were going to savage me.

Just wanted to vent, (no pun intended).....

Do they charge by the pound at the LHBS? Some do in my area.

I swap mine at the local AirGas for $12.86 for 5#, $15.36 for my 20#.

AirGas charged me about $45 for a 20# the last time I swapped it (about 1.5 years ago). Don't know where I am going next time, but I'm pretty sure it won't be Airgas.

Based on prior filling from there, this seemed like a huge price hike. The owner wasn't there so I am not sure if the employee just got charge happy. This is going to bug me for a while but I should just accept that it is done and move on! It is a ding for the LHBS though. Need to find a decent one in the Atlanta area. Seems like there would be dozens!

That's the way it is. Not a whole lot of competition means prices are all over the map. My previous supplier originally charged me $30 for 20 lbs, then $33, then $35. Same price for a swap or refill. The last time, it was $39. Time to switch suppliers. Turns out one of my LHBS does a swap for $25 if you join their CO2 'club' for $5. That's where I get it today. Not sure what he wants for smaller tanks. My son has a place by him that charges by the lb, so you can top off your tank before a party if you're nervous (and don't have a bathroom scale ). Another guy he knows charges the same price, regardless of tank size.

I suggest looking for a new place. The two places by my house are $14, and $10 for a 5 #er.

$23+ for a 5lb fill around here depending on the person ringing it up, I've been charged as much as $35 (Airgas is the only place within 2 hours and they're not afraid to take advantage of monopoly pricing)

I'd quit kegging if I had to pay that much...sounds like the US pharmaceutical monopoly

I called three other places. Cheapest place near me is $23/5lb. I'll have to ask at my local homebrew shops and see if any know of better pricing anywhere.

Go to a welding store, the lowest grade of CO2 available is that for food use (that way nothing can be screwed up) I guarantee you'll find it cheapter

You got ripped off, Manslayer. Call around fire/security businesses as well as welding shops. They might get you into the $15 range.

You can prime with 3 oz table sugar and some yeast from primary. Same as you'd prime bottles. A keg is just one big aluminum bottle, right? You want to get a solid seal on your keg with CO2 after racking. It'd be cheaper than ^^^ what you mentioned.

I knew I was getting screwed over based on prior CO2 purchases. I transitioned from a salt water aquarium hobby to this, where I used CO2 in a calcium reactor. It is just tough to negotiate after the tank has been filled. My bad for assuming they would be in alignment or even cheaper than a tank swap from Airgas.
