Greenville to be specific. What good breweries can I get out here (moving from Chicago). I'm familiar with Duck Rabbit and Mother Earth, but not really much else. Also, Every store I've been to so far in Greenville has been less than ideal in beer selection..but maybe I'm spoiled coming from Chicago.

Anyway, any tips on what beers to try, where to go for beer, etc would be greatly appreciated.

    Move back! Just kidding

Look for Foothills, Olde Hickory and as you mentioned Duck Rabbit and Mother Earth. Also, you could go for some regionally distributed such as Terrapin, Sweetwater, and they get Oskar Blues there as well

Edit: Love the Raffi avatar BTW

Thanks for the tips. Looks like Olde Hickory doesn't distribute this far east. Found a grocery store (Lowe's) that has a decent selection compared to others and they have a craft your own 6 pack with a bunch of NC beers. I picked up some Highland (Asheville) - black mocha stout and oatmeal porter, Duck Rabbit - brown ale and milk stout, Mother Earth - endless river, Terrapin - hopsecutioner, and Smuttynose IPA.

You may want to consider some of the breweries in Raleigh - Big Boss and Lonerider as brewery destinations if you aren't a Mother Earth fan. Also, Raleigh has a pretty active beer scene that other locals can give you better info on. BTW, welcome to NC. You will appreciate us more in November.

A 2 hr drive to Raleigh will cure all your beer want problems, NC is a pretty open market for a lot of different retailers.

I can't speak for Greenville, but I can provide you with advice for the Triangle.

Best bottle shop in the area is Sam's in Durham. My favorite places to buy beer in Raleigh are Tasty Beverage, Bottle Revolution and Ridgewood Beer and Wine (they have the best prices, but not as big of a selection. They also have about 16 killer beers on draft). Honorable mentions go to Apex Bottle Shop and Triangle Wine and Beer.

The best beer bars in Raleigh are The Busy Bee and The Raleigh Times.

Damn Oldhouse...moving down east is going to be harsh on your palate. It seems the college kids in Greenville only want to chug light beers and other domestics. Their idea of "good" beer is a Corona. Very little selection...honestly I haven't been out in Greenville in probably two years...and SN Torpedo was all I drank the entire weekend. Piss poor selection.

I usually skip Terrapin (but when Wake n Bake comes around, scoop that up fast. I like it more than FBS) and go straight for Sweetwater. Better overall beer, and their Dank Tank series is some good stuff --Sweet Stick Nugz and Ghoulash were really good. I would grab Duck Rabbit Hoppy Bunny, Barleywine, Baltic Porter, and Schwarzbier when they come around. Duck Rabbator isnt bad either. Definitely dont miss Mother Earth. Sunny Haze is an awesome hefe out of a can.

First of all, welcome to NC! You aren't too far from my current neck of the woods! (Goldsboro area.)

I'll have to go with the Mother Earth suggestions. Definitely visit their brewery and try out their other stuff. I would suggest their Dark Cloud Dunkel Lager (possibly one of my new favorite lagers in general), Sisters of the Moon IPA, and the Weeping Willow Wit (of course, everything they have is great). Natty Greene's is very common to find in most NC grocery stores. While they may not knock your socks off, they have a few good go-to's such as the Southern Pale Ale, Old Town Brown, Wildflower Wit, and Buckshot Amber. Their brewpubs are fun to go to though. (Their main location is Greensboro, and they have one in Raleigh as well.)

If you're ever in the western side of the state, I would definitely recommend anything from Olde Hickory. Their Black Raven IPA is one of the finest brews I've ever had from any NC brewery, no doubt. Also, Asheville is an essential place to go for any beer lover. Unfortunately, the last time I went, I was under time restraints, but from what beer I have had from that area, it's worth the hype. I would probably say that the mountainous region of NC has some of the state's best breweries anyway, imo.

    Enjoy your stay! Cheers!

Tried a pint of the hoppy bunny at a bar tonight and went and picked up a sixer as soon as I left.. good stuff. I'll be on the lookout for their other seasonals. I've tried the Southern Pale Ale.. nothing special, same with a couple lonerider and mother earth beers. I really should go check out the Mother Earth brewery so I can try everything right there and see what I like. One of the these weekends I'll have to do that and also check out the DR tap room.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions! I've only been drinking NC and regional beers since I've been here trying to find the best of the bunch. Even yuengling isn't that bad.

If you want to check the Duck Rabbit tap room, it's only open Friday evenings. Roughly 3-7, but may be a little later if there's a decent crowd. Also check out Cindirenes in Ayden. Only 15 mins or so south of Greenville. Selection isn't massive, but solid selection of craft beer as well as a couple of taps.

Didn't feel like a new thread as this pertains to my original post... I am finally venturing out to duck rabbit this friday. Question: do they sell six packs or growlers? I would love to get some of the dopplebock thats not super marked up at (for some reason at only 15 miles away) the only store that sells it in greenville.

Just FYI The Dopplebock (like many of their seasonal beers) is normally more expensive; usually around $13-$15 per 6er around here as opposed to $9 or so for their regular lineup.

Yeah I figured it costs more, but the one store charges more than that, as well as everything else (e.g. $25 for hopslam). Id rather buy from the brewery - if possible - to save money and directly support them.

Eastern NC, at least the Kinston and Greenville area tend to miss out on this bigger name releases. Chef & the Farmer/The Red Room/Mother Earth all rule as local beer spots, though. Tripel Overhead is definitely worth seeking out.

Greenville specifically, all I can think of is Christy's and Winslow's. Both have a decent selection and occasionally have something awesome on tap. My family lives in Kinston and I have a bunch of friends in Greenville, so if you ever wanna share some bottles or just grab a beer, let me know!

Edit: Oh, damn. I just noticed when this was posted. Whoops!

Yeah i originally posted this a while ago but brought it back to get some more info on duck rabbit as theyre website is highly outdated and facebook page isnt helpful.

Mother earth is awesome but have done anything else in kinston. And you nailed it with winslows and christys. What does come through goes there, but in such limited quantities. And i would love to share some bottles with you or any other BA people in the area. I have yet to meet anyone that shares my appreciation of beer yet.
