I just moved here and am a bit overwhelmed by all the local new england breweries that I don't know where to start. Like many, IPAs are my favorite type of beer. I've had JA's 2nd anniversary and love it, had Peeper which was ok and I'm looking to see what other local brews are worth trying out. Thanks for any tips.

Love Jacks Abby. Try Newburyport Greenhead IPA (it is a raw grassy ipa)

Visited Boston recently and tried Congress St. IPA from Trillium Brewing... Wow. Certainly up there with some of the best IPAs ive ever had. Unsure about the size, availability, or distro for anything Trillium however.

Anything from Trillium is great, but their hoppy offerings are fantastic. No bottles, growler fills only. They're open Tuesday-Saturday, and fill 32oz and 64oz growlers. You can also find them on draft around the city in select locations. http://www.trilliumbrewing.com/wordpress_blog/

Another favorite of mine is Cambridge Brewing Co over in Kendall Sq in Cambridge (of course). Food and beers are excellent, and they bottle a few things throughout the year that can be found in most beer stores.

As far as hoppy offerings go:

Pretty Things: Meadowlark IPA (22oz bottle, most recent bottling is September - Citra & Galaxy IPA)
    Wormtown: Be Hoppy (22oz)
Jack's Abby: Hoponius Union (recently moved to 6pks)
Maine Beer: Lunch (inconsistent, but decent, tougher to find)
    Blatant: IPA (22oz)
Backlash: Outbreak (22oz - single hop Mosaic IIPA)

    enjoy!

    I'd go with in stores:

    Wachusett Larry
    Ithaca Flower Power
    MBC Lunch and Mo
    JA Hoponius Union

    Breweries:
Trillium - Fort Point PA and Congress St
Tree house - Julius or Sap

I'd add Rising Tide's Calcutta Cutter. It's a new IIPA and easily the best New England IPA I've had outside of VT.

Another vote for Trillium. I can't wait for their Fort Point Pale to return in Nov/Dec after they get the new hop harvest in.

Get up to Mystic if you can. Easier with a car, doable by bus.

To paraphrase Charlie Papazian, Relax, don't worry, have a brew.
Don't rush things, take your time and try what looks good to you. Talk to people at the bottle shops and see what they're into.
There is a ton of great beers coming up around here these days, and the bad ones are few and far between.

    Lots of good advice here.

    For hoppy stuff my favorites are;
    ME - Lunch
    Wachusett - Larry
    Treehouse - Any IPA
    Harpoon - Leviathan DIPA

Make a VT trip sometime if you can as well.

Thanks for all the recs. Will start making my way through these soon. And I've been blessed to be at a party where a case of Heady Topper was shared. Have to make my way to Hill Farmstead. Overlapped with Shaun for a few years in college.

And when on the other side of the river, Deep Ellum in Allston is a worthy alternative.

Welcome to Massachusetts. Now get with the program and turn that smile upside down.

Try the Mayflower porter, it's a game changer. +1 on the Wachusett larry. Also Jacks Abby smoke and dagger.

Blue Lobster in Hampton, NH has Golden Claw and Stockholm Syndrome. Both are great hoppy beers and draft only. You have to get growler fills at the brewery to try them.

Mayflower Porter, Jack's Abby Hoponius Union, and Pretty Things Jack D'or should be on your hit list for sure.
