    Hey Everyone!

I just made a cross country move from New England to Portland, OR. What a time it's been so far! As I'm getting settled, I'm finding myself with more free time to explore the beer scene and try the local favorites. Even as an enthusiast, the shear amount of good beer is a little overwhelming here. I'm looking for any recommendations to start my foray into Oregon beer. Are there any hidden gem breweries or bars I need to check out? Any particular beer from a local brewery? What are some bars with the best selections? I'm open to any and all suggestions. Thank you for any help. It's great to be here. Cheers!

What's your rush? You live there now. Do you own adventuring. Check out the 'places' link and check it out for yourself.

I just did the same thing, came from NJ. I've been very busy with the beer scene, but I had been here several time before so I knew where I wanted to go. Here are my suggestions:

Breakside Brewing - head up to the pub on Dekum for happy hour. Great food deals and imo the best IPA in town.
Belmont Station - awesome bottle shop/bar
Apex - crazy selection at the bar; cash only
Beer Mongers - across the street from Apex, super cool bottle shop

Also, I feel obligated to pay this forward, so I'd recommend following a bunch of bars on Twitter or checking websites often and do what you can to get your hands on some Barley Brown's stuff wherever you see it. They've been my favorite "discovery" since getting here.

Sign up for Brew Notice, pick all the bars in town, and (hopefully) never miss a kick ass beer again.

Every place is a hidden gem, because there is good beer everywhere. Everywhere.

That said, I have to recommend Upright Brewing. Their tasting room and brewing facility are in the basement of an office building over near Moda Center. Great beers, unique atmosphere, and a fine place to spend some time on a weekend afternoon. Don't overlook their Engelberg Pilsner, which is an outstanding version of an oft-maligned style.

I also like the Biercafe at Belmont Station. Especially the patio.

Not sure if you have heard of a little brewery called Pyramid... but they make a beer called Apricot Ale.

    All. Day.

Edit: Don't listen to me, I have no idea what im talking about.

I hear there are great beers being made in Nevada, and it borders Orygun.

It's been years since I was a fresh faced transplant, and there's considerably more options now than when I arrived, but my MO for exploring was to buy an all day Trimet pass, ride to a different neighborhood every day, and then wander around all day checking out the sights (and beers).

Websites like Yelp, social media, and BA have taken a lot of the surprises out of life, but even now I am still pleasantly surprised when I walk into some random hole in the wall Thai restaurant and find something like pFriem Blonde IPA on tap.

Yeah, honestly, turn off your social media for a few weeks, and just go explore on your own, and word-of-mouth from folks you talk to. There'll be plenty of time for chasing stuff later. there's little hurrying about beer out here, cuz it's everywhere, always.

on a similar note: enjoy the slower pace PNW has compared to the east coast, enjoy the abundance of great beer with no mass hysteria attached, and realize any local IPA that is on draft is probably excellent, but if there's something from boneyard or barley browns on the draft list, you probably should be ordering that

Oh yeah. I visited Seattle/Tacoma/Portland this past October. I had heard of Boneyard and my first stop when I was there was at the Parkview in Tacoma where I had a Hop Venom. Great way to start a trip. In Portland, the guy at Beer Mongers told me to go across the street to Apex and have a Barley Brown Pallet Jack. My first reaction was "I don't like Brown Beers". I'm glad he 'splained and I enjoyed it immensely. In fact, my wife and I will be moving either to Seattle or Denver in the next year and I will certainly welcome the slower pace.
