Just had my first Zombie Dust. Good brew to be sure, reminds me of a lot of good IPAs I've had this past year. And that's just it. Why isn't this classified as an American IPA? That is what it is.

Apologies if this ground has been covered. Cheers!

Don't worry about what it is called. Just enjoy it.
The question I had after trying my first ZD, "When can I have my second ZD?"

Had my first ZD last night also(thanks SammyJaxxxx). Enjoyed it very much and thought it was an IPA so this is news to me. I may have enjoyed it even more if it wasn't so overhyped as it seems its getting harder and harder for most of the "world class" rated beers to blow me away, but it was very good and I would buy on a regular basis if it was available near me.

That sums it up for me too. I think I was expecting something totally unique, something I'd never had before. ZD was just like a lot of other piney, citrusy IPAs out there. No denying it's delicious, but I think all the hype might have ruined it for me a little bit. Still have two more, I doubt they'll survive the weekend.

that's not why it's classified a pale ale on beer advocate. it's entirely subjective as to who makes the original review, or as the bro's see fit. how the brewery classifies it seems to be irrelevant here. you don't see categories for white ipa's, black ipa's or, imperial pale lagers. they're just lumped into a category that is already listed that seems to fit best. seems a bit inhibiting if you ask me. who really is the style czar?

Interesting. Can you give me an example of a beer that is rated one style by the brewery and a different style here on BA? I always thought it was based on the brewery classification.

Because the line is kind of subjective

jack's abby - hoponius Union is termed an "IPL" from the brewery, but is listed as a "dortmunder/export lager" on ba.

the majority of, if not all black ipa's are listed as "american black ales" and almost all white ipa's are listed at "belgian ipa's" which isn't necessarily correct.

i think regardless of color, yeast, etc., if it's a hop forward beer, it should probably be listed as an ipa. black ipa, white ipa, pink-eye-pa..who gives a s#$&?

Reminds me of my first Lagunitas Sucks. When I reviewed it I think it was listed as an American strong ale or something. I submitted a correction to BA (I think others probably did too) and the listing was eventually changed.

I won't bother submitting a correction for ZD, looks like FFF considers it a pale ale so whatever. If I had to guess why they classify it this way, I'd say it's easier to get a higher rating in the APA category compared to other pale ales than to go up again 1,000 other citrusy, piney IPAs. But that's just me being paranoid.

From what I've gathered, I think its because the malt bill stands up to the hop profile, as opposed to being overshadowed by it like in IPA's.

Only about a dozen cases. It is quite malty, as is Alpha King.

You need to chill son. The first reviewer could have called it a stout if he wanted; somebody would eventually submit a correction, cite a reason (in this case brewer's description) and it would be changed. Happens all the time. Mods don't go about adding details for beers.

In summary, chill out. It's no big deal.

Edit: Would like to add that it's laziness on the original reviewer's part to not check the brewer's webpage or release announcement for details.

You and I have very different palates. I found the pale malt to be dry and biscuity, a good neutral canvas to showcase the Citra hops. Just the way I like my IPAs. Never had Alpha King so can't compare.

When I think malty I think something like Maharaja or Big Eye.

I guess after your palate has been scorched by enough FFF's beers, their heavy malt bill becomes much more obvious  The hops can fade pretty quickly on their beers, leaving plenty of time to become acquainted with the sweeter side of their beers.

Well, along w/ the ZD (received today via trade) I also got some Dreadnaught, APW, and Gumballhead. So I'll have a chance to familiarize myself w/ FFF over the weekend. I don't intend to let it sit around long enough for that heavy malt bill to take over.

because its just dry-hopped. And it wont be same ever again with any other beer. I compare every pale to ZA, and every PA loses.
