Visiting Kane later today/tonight and was wondering what their growler policy is? Do I have to buy one or can I bring one I already own?
You can bring your own as long as its 64 oz. They don't fill the 32 oz. State law changed changed over a year ago as it used to say NJ breweries could only fill their own growlers but thankfully that is no longer the case.
Also, they usually post what's available around noon on FB and Twitter. Everything is typically available for fills outside of barrel-aged or one-off beers (if there's any on tap).
Like GoGators said, they'll only fill 64 oz. growlers. They now have 2L swingtop growlers like Sierra Nevada, Russian River, Hill Farmstead etc. They're $12 each + the fill. I think Head High was $16 and Overhead was $18. Not sure about the rest of stuff that they have. Have fun!
Hey all, planning a Kane trip in a few weeks and just wanted to confirm - can I bring any 64oz growler, blank or another brewery growler, or does it have to be strictly a blank growler?
Does anyone happen to know why they don't fill 32's? I would totally stop on my way down the shore for a couple 32's if they did it but don't necessarily want a full growler. It just seems weird that they wouldn't do 32's.
I think their POS system is ready for it, but last i heard they were only going to start with 32oz fills when they have some of their own to sell, not sure when that will be be, but i will be excited when they do it.
Yes - Carton will fill any 64 oz growler, and they will also put a Carton sticker over the brewery if you let them.
They have enough low ABV stuff at the moment to justify a 64 oz fill.... check out Ripple or Single Fin, both 5% or under.
So NJ state law changed to allow 32oz growlers in addition to 64oz, but Kane won't fill 32oz because they don't have their own 32oz growlers yet? Is that the clear cut case here? I'd rather get 32oz or 750ml growlers instead of 64oz or 2L. My preference. I have 5 empty Hill Farmstead 750ml growlers that I'd love to be able to use to fill with some good beer.
The recent law that went into effect last September - the so-called NORCROSS BILL - had no specific provision on growler size that I ever read of, and 32 oz./1 liter growlers have always been legal AFAIK (indeed, one quart was the typical size for cardboard "containers" that were common in the state from Repeal into the 1970s). I've never filled anything but a quart growler, but all my growler fills have been at liquor stores or bars, not breweries or brewpubs. The Norcross bill loosened the rules that differentiated "microbreweries" from "brewpubs" in the state, so that brewpubs can now distribute and breweries can sell more beer direct to consumers, both for on- and off-premise etc. It also gave both some of the same benefits in-state wineries had.
There's no particular official reason why they don't fill 32oz growlers, it's just not something they do currently. They have growler tubes that could fill them, they have the capability in the POS to ring it up, and they would make more money per ounce, but it's just not something they do. It is true though that they are looking into offering Kane-branded 32oz growlers for sale, at which point they would start filling any 32oz growlers.
