Heading to KC in a week or so. Is it a craft beer wasteland besides Blvd or are there other places breweries/pubs/shops I should hit up? Thanks for the help
Check out this article - http://m.pitch.com/kansascity/grab-...ansas-city-area-breweries/Content?oid=5282280 A lot of new breweries popping up. Other than BLVD, my fave is Martin City
Jumping on this thread, headed to KC tomorrow for 2 nights. Have time on Wed. and scored a Boulevard Smokestack Tour, is it worth the $20 or should I just visit the tasting room and sample what ever I want? Also hitting Bier Station later with a trading partner.
I've never done the Smokestack Tour. I've done the free tour a few times, which has been great. Depends on the tour guide though. Some are awesome. It's free and you get to samples a couple of beers for free. Show up around 10am to reserve tickets for any time that day. Bier Station is the best beer bar in the city for sure. That'll be a good time.
I'm obviously biased, but we've never received any negative feedback regarding the Smokestack Tour and the perceived value of it. You'll get access to places not normally seen on the public tour and it finishes with guided beer and food pairing after which you'll have time to sample/drink the other beers on tap.
My goal is to hit Martin City, KC Bier Co, & Border Brewing. I've been to Cinder Block and like it. Torn Label has good brews too.
I'd definitely skip Border Brewing. The beers range from mediocre to bad. One of them was the worst beer I've ever had in my life. If you haven't been to Cinder Block lately, I'd go back. Lately, they've had their Peach Apricot sour on, and it's fucking fantastic.
nice, that peach apricot sounds tasty. i'm also going to be in KC this friday and was looking to hit up some new (to me) places. love boulevard but it's the only brewery i've been to in KC & wanted to try some other options. also probably sounds sacrilegious, but was looking for a non-bbq food option - great beer selection is a plus but not necessary - can any locals vouch for rye? edit: also is there any particular bar in KC you all would recommend if i was primarily looking for local options? i haven't tried any of the breweries mentioned above yet and my time may be limited to just the afternoon...
Rye is good. My favorite restaurant solely for food (and cocktails) is The Rieger. They have 4 taps, so it's not a beer destination. It's going to be hard to find a bar with most of the local taps, because they rotate so much at the good beer places. If time limited, I'd consider going downtown and bar hopping. Flying Saucer and Yard House are a block apart. Saucer is my favorite bar in the city, and while I don't go to Yard House, they've got 130 taps, and simply by virtue of having so many, they have a lot of the local options. From a quick glance over the menu, they've got 3 KCBC, 2 Cinder Block, 1 Martin City, 1 Torn Label (though they're all regular line-up stuff and not seasonal/special stuff). You're also close to The Belfry and Anton's downtown, which both have a lot of taps.
Tour was awesome, Adam was our guide, great insight into the brewery and the tasting/pairing at the end were excellent. Not to mention the Tank 7 walking beer. Money well spent,
Heading to KC this week, checking if anyone has anything new to add to this thread? I'll be staying on the north side, so planning on stopping at Cinder Block. I would appreciate any good relaxed food options with a decent tap list. I'll be the only beer nerd in our group, so I have sell them on the food ;-)
I don't live in KC any more, but will chime in. Someone above mentioned Antons and I enjoyed their food a lot. He also mentioned Belfry which is about a block or two away...if you're feeling flush (or on expense account!) they have Pappy. Both have pretty good taps (as of my last visit in early summer, at least).
