Really quick back story... I love beer, used to live in Porstmouth before I ever knew about KtG, always wanted to try this beer, have nothing close to trade for it, about to have my first kid so resigned to buy this beer on-line so I can drink it to celebrate. Obviously expensive and not ideal but question is for anyone with experience with this beer, there is a 2008, 2010, and 2012 for sale. Assuming I will drink within a year and they are all the same price which would you choose?

    Thanks for the info.

all the same price ? the 2012 is a 12oz bottle, the '08 and '10 are bombers. personally, i'd grab the '10. how much ?

If they're all the same price then don't go for 2012 since it's a smaller bottle (11.2 oz vs 22oz for other years). I'd personally go for the 2010, heard from a friend that the older ones aren't faring too well.

Yeah sorry I was factoring in that the 2012 was less expensive because it was a 330ml, ounce per ounce around the same price.

I have a bomber from 2011, but I've only opened a 2012 vintage. Personally I was rather unimpressed compared to the reviews I read and the hype. I've always said if you're going to do something, do it right. I'd go with the 2010 or 2008. Read reviews and make the decision yourself. I understand the reasoning behind the purchase and I know that before I had Kate, nothing would've steered me away. But if you're willing to pay the price I highly recommend investing in a different stout that drinks better. Good luck either way.

I just had a 2010 the other day and it was awful. So I'd recommend not that one.

(I'd actually recommend not buying it and waiting until Todd Mott starts making it a year-round beer at his new place. Of course, then it won't taste as good because it won't be .rar, but whatever.)

I cracked an '11 a few weeks ago and it was f*cking amazing. Perfect time to drink it if you got it. 2012's are best fresh and the '10 is a bit past. The Port in Kate doesn't bode well over time. It brings out a bit of a tart character.

I'm happy I saw this post. I haven't seen many reviews indicating that Kate picks up tart qualities over time, but I will definitely look into it more carefully now. I have a bomber left that was given to me as a gift so I wasn't planning on drinking it for a while. But I've heard from more people than you that the 2011 vintage is drinking great.
