Going there for a week. Any craft available?
Cheers and mahalo.
Kauai Beer Company in Lihue
Was just there. Best selection I found was Living Foods in Poipu and The Wine Garden in Lihue
Do a search for Kauai, I did right before I left for my current trip. Kauai Beer in Lihue and Kauai Island Brewing in Port Allen are the only breweries. The Feral Pig, Kalapaki Joe's and Kalypso Restaurant seem to have the best available on tap. You will find that Deshutes, Maui brewing, Kona brewing and Big Island Brewing are your normal finds.
I'd avoid kalapaki joes, that place sucks. Keoki's Paradise is a better option if you're in poipu, IMO.
Will have to check them out this week. Thanks for the heads up on Kalapaki Joe's, hadn't been there yet was only going by other comments. I have been to Feral Pig and Kalypso.
Ok guys, thanks for the info.
Awesome! Glad I saw this. I was born in Lihue, (Wilcox hospital) and I'm going there tomorrow the 12th-16th. Thanks for the info guys!!!
Stopped at the Wine Garden today which had a nice selection including Sculpin and Idiot IPA. On the way back to the North shore I decided to stop at the Princeville Wine Market and he had an even bigger selection. The first thing I saw was Elijah Craig Eclipse. I'm guessing the wine shops use the same distributor so they would be your best choices for a bottle shop.
Kauai Island Brewing is a definite must stop. We got to know the head brewer, Dave, who is a very nice guy. Loves to talk about beer & will gladly show you the (small) brewhouse if you're into that. Tell him Chris from San Diego says hello!
Kauai Beer Co. Is the best brewery on that island, hands down. Try to go on Thursday when they have the food trucks. Oh, & buy a growler to go.
Kauai beer co will fill any growler, FYI. They have odd hours so make sure you check before going.
Kalypso was a disappointment. Haven't found any decent tap selections on the North shore.
That place was the best we ran into on the north shore for taps, not a lot of options in Hanalei. I didn't care for kalypso, the crowd or the employees. Peek your head in at Hanalei Gourmet across the street, may have better options and definitely less of the tommy bahama crowd.
Bumping this to see what's around at retail in Kauai. Thanks!
Yep... getting to go to Kauai in August... very excited.... will have a fridge... so I'll look for Princeville Wine Market.. we are staying in Lihue so Kauai Beer Company will be a must stop.
Put a mixed case of brews on the plane with you.
Packed 8 cans with me to start...... will try to post if/where I find the good stuff... thanks for the advice everyone. Man.. it's early here in Houston... leaving for airport now.
Take some cans to Kauai Beer Co in Lihue and share with the owner and his son (head brewer). Great guys. Great brewery.
there's an excellent pizza place in Old Koloa Town that had a few good taps and killer pizza. It can't be hard to find, as the "strip" is about 5 stores long.
I didn't get to bring very much.. had three cans, but accidentally left them in the fridge the morning we left out... I did hit up Kauai Beer Company THREE times... tried every beer they had brewed... really high quality stuff... great small brewery. I was very impressed. I ended up at Kauai Island Brewery twice... not bad, but very average overall... I highly recommend Kauai Beer Company over them.... better atmosphere and better beer.
BUMP BUMP BUMP..
Anything new or not mentioned come to light recently? My wife and I are headed to Oahu (2 days) then Kauai (8 days) for our honeymoon starting Sept. 22 - Oct 2
Also, any special events (beer-centric or not) happening?
Kauai Beer Co just released their newest Wet Hop Ale today. Cascade hops. Do stop in and say hi and try some of their great beers. All around great place.
Just had loads of fun there. Nothing on the beer front though. . As lame as Luaus sounded, I rather loved Smith's
Bring a snorkel for north shore
Had a great time on our honeymoon. Kauai Beer Company is the shit. Kauai Island Brewing was just okay. Brought a growler of Kauai Beer Co. Wet Hop all the way up 4,200+ feet on our Wiamea hike. Not a crazy selection at shops but it was nice to try of Hawaiian craft. Kalypsos on the North Shore... coldest beer I've ever had, awesome. Thanks for all the tips! Cheers!
Smith's is an awesome time!
I'm currently in Kauai and just wanted to say that between the Foodland and the Wine Market, Princeville has the best bottle selection I've seen on the island.
Also opened a 2013 Sahalie and a Ginger Bu Rice at Kauai Ono tonight. That was fantastic with the amazing food.
Just landed in Kauai, and went looking through this thread. Turns out Feral Pig is permanently closed, so folks doing what I did? Don't get your hopes up on that front.
Hitting both local breweries this week, and slamming the canned Maui beers available at Foodland in the meantime.
Biggest sorrow is that the Big Island Brewing Imperial Red w/Cacao isn't on shelves here. That beer made me so happy on my last trip out to the islands.
Also, always looking for Black Pearl, but haven't made it to Maui in a decade. Someday I might get lucky...
Here now as well. The foodland in princeville had a good selection. As for restaraunts, the happy talk lounge at hanalei bay resort had 10 taps and street burger in Kapaa also had quite a few.
Kauai Beer Co. of course. Orange and Tropical Armadillo outstanding
Kona Brewing Hanalei IPA. I've had the bottled version here in MO and it was just OK. Tap version in Hawaii was really good. Should find it all over. Was a nice goto at Brennecke's in Poipu.
Monica's Taqueria - awesome Mexican food near Kapaa. Worthy. Kona bottles.
Hanalei. Kalypso Bar & Grill had an impressive tap list. Pinks Creamery is top notch ice cream.
Talk Story at Hanalei Bay resort had a couple of interesting selections. Bartender gets to choose a couple.
Tahiti Nui. Filmed Descendents there. A few MBC taps.
Keoki's Paradise in Poipu also had a couple of interesting choices. Again, bartender gets some leeway.
More Poipu. Merriman's. High price restaurant that had some nice bottles. Had a Big Island Brewhaus Holy Humulus bomber.
Checking if there is an update on this thread? I'm heading to Kauai in June, wondering if there's any place worth visiting. Or should I just bring my own beers.
It def won’t hurt to bring your own.
Thanks, I figured as much . I'll just bring a 1 bottle of Bourbon to save space.
Kauai Beer Company was really solid, definitely worth stopping in.
I posted in the IP trading forum, but here seems like a good idea too.
I'm going to be in Kauai from 6/12 to 6/18. I can bring Russian River for someone who wants some. I'm not looking for anything special in return, but I would be happy to help someone out who would like to try something new.
