I bet only an Iowan can even comprehend the thought process going on here.

Every farmer in the state has your back.

I'm drinking a pliny the elder as i read this. let me tell you about PTE. lets say 4-5 years ago, it would pull so much. it was highly rated, hard to get, yadda yadda yadda. now, no one cares. its easier to get, but newer insta whales have emerged. fast forward a few years when TG ups production, releases thousands of bottles, and everyone (as in everyone NOT from iowa) says "its just not as good anymore". and the latest brewery from holedrag wyoming that makes 35 bottles of an imp stout barrel aged and only comes in 5oz format is FT / ISO: blauw.

    NAILED IT

I've got no dog in this fight, but I'd assume it's not a doable ISO, so don't, let it sit or let the owners enjoy their beer. I can't remember seeing a FT , so it's not being shopped.

Side by side tonight - split 6 ways.
Huge thanks to Pat and Mark for opening them at our share!!!

My thoughts (some shared - some not, tonight by my beer group).

Last years is definitely better now than it was fresh (I personally thought there was too much maple then) - everyone agreed.
This years is better than last years is now - but not by much - and maybe 2/3 as sweet as '13 - half the people agreed
This years is just a tad hot, but so much more balanced and the coffee presence is the perfect amount - everyone agreed to half of that statement.

I will have to put it at the top of the list for best stout (BA or other) that I've had the pleasure to drink.

To put in perspective (for me anyway)...
I would rather share 1 bottle of KBBS than have DBH, BA Abraxas and Prop put together.
It's simply just that good, and I can understand why there are so few trades getting done.

Just extremely hard to put a trade value on perfection.

    Full disclosure:
I gave KBBS a 4.5 on the quick rate last year, due to the massive overage of maple in the taste (IMO).
I plan on doing a full review someday and bumping it up to a 5 due to how well it's developed, and noting the differences in the two batches.

    Cheers!

While I respect your opinion and post (thanks for the tasting notes), you are insane. :astonished: Full disclosure, I've never had it, but I would rather share 3 large format bottles of equal quality (subjective ) than 1 small format bottle.

Oh, nice picture by the way.

I can understand your feelings of insanity on my part - and no offense taken at all.
Let me try to word it better, and more accurately to scale - perhaps.

We split a 12 ounce bottle six ways.

I would much rather drink 2 ounces of KBBS than 12 ounces of DBH, BA Abraxas & Prop (totals split six ways) in succession.
Partly because I've had all, and mostly because I believe KBBS to be far supreme to the others.

We actually discussed how many DBH's it would take to pry a KBBS away, if we could/would trade one.
Most answered 3, while a couple people said 2+ (or ++).
I, theoretically, might do it for 3 - but I'd probably trade 2 of the DBH for numbers.

    Cheers!

i am willing to bet its amazing, and i have never had it. all i am saying is going huge on trades for it is silly when it will most likely be produced in greater quantities and there will always be a new flavor of the month coming up that people will throw insane trades at.

make friends, trade with them, send them rare stuff and ask for whatever back and i promise it will be more fun than the stupid trade ransoms going on today. i am sending someone a SP fencerow and could give a fuck what i get in return. sent someone some saison fermier for pliny the elder and blind pig. sent a blueberry flanders because why not (well it was also a thank you for a nice gesture).

    and it was amazing.

As someone who did this with most of the KBBS stock I got this year, I can confirm. I take much more joy in being able to tell a long time trading friend that I've been able to land them a rare beer than I do from getting 10 bottles back for that rare beer and drinking them. JMO. With some long term trading friends, we don't really even "trade" anymore. We just send beers when we have beers to share. It's much better than playing the trading game, and it always works out in the end.

While I so very much wish for it, I seriously doubt it. First, there is this:

Second, TG is still self-distributing. Making 1000's of these bottles just seems well beyond their capability, even way deep into the future, let alone finding the barrels needed to age these. Founders is HUGE in comparison, facility and resources, and has been for many years. DIPA don't count because they don't take long to make and no barrels are needed so scaling up production isn't as difficult. I think the comparable brewery size, production, and trend of growth to KBBS would be Alpine Great (first came out in 2005) and is still extremely limited and difficult to get. Even for FFF, which is larger than TG, and BVDL (2008), it's been 6 years and of course no hope for any scaling up in production ease up demand. How about Kuhnhenn Raspberry Eisbock? First released in 2003 so where is that thousands of bottle now after 11 years? KBBS will likely follow the trend of these beers rather Pliny or KBS, unfortunately.

Just out of pure curiosity at this point, has anyone actually landed a KBBS via trade yet? Willing to share details?

I know of someone who has multiple bottles who traded 1 straight up for a BVDL.

I agree with this sentiment though I can't really ever fault people for trading a rare beer that they went and got in order to acquire beers that they may never have had a chance to try otherwise. If both sides are happy, good. This plan can obviously get abused through mules though :slight_frown:

First off, I can't get this, and I can't afford it.

But the elephant in the room that no one is talking about is the fact that there are some rich folks out there. Really really rich folks. Seriously... even the most lopsided trade that has been offered up is what, $200 worth of beer? That is nothing for some people. A ton of folks would drop $200 on a bottle of wine at dinner (ON A TUESDAY). And there are more than likely more than a handful of those people on beeradvocate. You can't afford it, big deal. Shots of Louis XIII go for $250 at my favorite bar. Do I buy them? Nope. Do other people? Yep. And that is 2 ounces... and they could buy a bottle containing 16 times that amount for 2-3k... and they STILL buy it.

Hater tempest in a hate cup.

I see this "maximum value guy" thing thrown around a lot. What's the big deal? If the beer is big enough, and rare enough, you're going to think twice before swapping it for anything other than what it's actually worth. Not $4$ but value for value. I've got several bottles of Olde Hickory's Blendiculous 1 - and it's crazy good and insanely rare. I decided I'd only swap it for a King Henry, and with no effort (KH was offered to me for a bottle), that trade is being made. Now, that being said - if someone contacted me and offered 100 different bottles of fantastic beer for a Blendi 1 - why would I be a jerk to take them up on that offer?

I look at both - those who try to maximize FT, and those who are ridiculous with their ISO - with equal disdain. Combined they've ruined trading beer.

I know it sounds like I'm picking on you, @markgugs, and I apologize for that. You've seen trading change, I'm sure - you've been on BA since 2006. I'm relatively new to it - only been trading for about three years. Maybe I'd share your feelings if I'd seen the "glory days" of trading. I can keep your thoughts in perspective easily... I've lived most of my life an hour or two from Asheville. We used to drive up a dozen times a year, hang out, enjoy great food and beer, spend about $70 for a hotel... blah, blah, blah. Now rooms are expensive, if you can find one, my favorite restaurants require reservations - it's crowded and crazy and I'm jaded. I get it. Still, I don't feel like the influx of new breweries and people have ruined Asheville - they've just changed it. I have no problem with anyone trying to "maximize" their trades. It's an open market - I have free will, I can take them up on their trades or not. I've met some amazing people trading - and the vast majority of them have blown me away with their generosity.
