So I was going through my cellar and I realized that I didn't mark the year on any of my kbs bottles. Now I'm not sure what year they're from. Is there any way I can find out (without opening the bottle)?

There is usually a date stamp on the neck somewhere but it rubs off very easily

I thought it was on the label?

2015 vintage has the year on the label. I don't think that's true of earlier vintages.

On the neck for date stamp. If the beer has ever been in a fridge or a cooler it often is missing. The ink founders uses washes off very easily...

Oh, and none of my 14 has the vintage on the label, so that must be new

I have a mix too, not a clue to the year released. I'm not stressing every one has been outstanding, and if there's a difference I can't tell.

I've seen a mix of Founders products with a date stamp in yellow as well as black ink. It's nearly impossible to see the date on a stout bottle if it's black ink, and as previously mentioned, it does rub off easily. Plus, I think Founders has been inconsistent with keeping that date-stamping machine operating.

I believe that the slogan on the label changes from year-to-year. One might say "will not cure rheumatism" where another might say "not to be used as aroma therapy"...or something of the sort. I think that is your best way of determining your KBS vintages sans bottle date.

However, it is this Beer Advocate subscriber's opinion that thinks KBS does not age as gracefully as other BBA Imperial Stouts. Once the beer is separated from the coffee (which I assume is added to each bourbon barrel), that component tends to die out within 6 months. I have had 1-year aged KBS (2013 & 2014) and it was not exactly the world-class beer that it is immediately after bottling.

The bottles I bought this year at their release, clearly have the date stamped on them. Not true of past years. And yes, this year they have 2015 on the label.

Search the forums. A couple people have asked this question and people have posted photos/instructions on how to differentiate KBS from year-to-year.

just drink them now. KBS is pretty bad after it peaks at about 6 months

I think you'd fall into the overwhelming minority on that point...

I agree with @SteveD082791 on the aging. I think it is mediocre at best after about 6-9 months. That said, I think its great fresh.

Please don't tell me this! I had a buddy pick me up some today actually and since i live overseas he isn't to keen on sending it to me, i get it he doesnt wanna risk getting in trouble. Totally understandable, even though i've had multiple bottles sent to me from other people but i basically wont get to try it until it is a year aged. I'm sure either way it will be great but i do want the full expierience for taste.

Well, maybe I am just not a Founders Fan boy because I just had full pours of both KBS and CBS tonight and I was extremely underwhelmed by both. It was my first time having CBS, and I would drink Hipster Brunch every day of the week over this.

I realize that I am merely one opinion in the crowd, but I could not have been more disappointed. Oddsides,, keep making great beer!
