purchasing and trying KBS for the first time this year. basically have around a case on lock down but have heard some people say its not as good with age on it and i dont want to buy so much of a "amazing" beer and have some of it go bad.

    cheers.

I didn't think it was so great fresh, had it aged and loved it. Maybe my palate just changed? Either way, it tasted great with a year on it.

I'm in the tastes great fresh camp, not a huge fan of it after a year, it loses a lot of the coffee flavors. If I were you I'd buy it, try it fresh and if you don't like it, age it for a year, if you still don't like it trade it.

Fresh. You lose many unique characteristics with age. With age flavors are going to meld together, honestly become slightly less interesting. It is still a great beer with age but I prefer it within the first year.

Had it fresh. Wasn't overly impressed. Had one this past Sunday with a year on it and it was delicious.

If it helps IMO '12 kbs is drinking amazing right now. I really like kbs and regular breakfast stout with a year on them. I can't hang on to them any longer than that just to good!

What do you find about the FBS that makes it so good with a year of age on them? I might experiment, save two bottles of my next FBS purchase if I think its worthwhile...

See FBS to me is already tasting less coffee therefore less good to me ...that's what I fear with KBS

This just my opinion but sometimes FBS is a bit acidic to me. I feel its because of the coffee. I taste it more in the bottles than in draft for some reason. Last year as an experiment I saved some and it mellowed it out. Plus I get more chocolate in older bottles . Just had a '11 fbs last week and I loved it!

Just trust your own palate. If it says the beer is good drink 'em! I actually feel I am in the minority with coffee stouts because I like a more subtle coffee note as opposed to aggressive coffee. I age coffee bcs as well and prefer it older too.

You've convinced me to save away 2 bottles of FBS from 2012.

I'm on the fresh bandwagon.. it seems to lose what makes it great with age. Don't get me wrong, it's still just fine with some age.. but fresh is where it's at in this case, IMO..

Fresh. Aged KBS tastes poor to me.
