My plan was different than calling around; I went to shops that I knew would get KBS the day before arrival(I was stocking up on other stuff anyways), talked to the beer manager in person while selecting a bottle or more from each store, and do to this I was giving some tips on when those stores would be getting it and making it available. I think the personal touch helped a little plus they see me in their stores regularly anyways.

I actually found some KBS on the shelf at a store in Northern Michigan this past week. Along with a sixer of 2011 Bigfoot and a 2010 Orval. I was happy.

Don't tell anybody else you found beer brewed in Michigan, actually in Michigan. They'll flip out!

My point was that I bought this beer off the shelf, at a grocery store of all places. Just like I could with relative ease several yrs ago, before the reservations, truck chasers, and overnight campers.

It was more of a "GET OFF MY LAWN" at the new elements in craft beer purchasing than a "LOOK AT ME" to the perpetrators.

I think it will get a little easier to find each year. Either Founders will expand production or people will move on to something else. When Double Bastards first started coming to my region it wasn't as crazy but a similar situation. Now it is easy find months after release.

According to the website Founders doesn't distribute in FL. So the issue isn't price gouging but why is that store selling it? And who sold wholesale to them?

I know it's a long thread, but if you read through it, you'll see that although the OP is from Florida, he indicated he was at a store in Birmingham, Alabama.

I knew a few places that had this beer in stock last year and this year only a mere couple. Maybe it's because we got less cases or maybe it is just better in other states but it's the worst I ever seen.

I still can't believe the one place that had a 1/2 case worth sold them all at 15 dollars a bottle. True insanity!

I am sure this all been said already, but just in case it hasn't (or a big +1 if it has):

#1 You can't price gouge beer. It's a luxury item, whether you're willing to admit that or not is irrelevant.

#2 Not buying from a store that has unreasonable prices does way more stop them from charging unreasonable prices than complaining about it on a beer website (not saying that OP didn't do this already, just putting it out there). When you purchase something, regardless of whether you think you're getting ripped off or not you are essentially saying to the store owner "Your prices are fair, keep it up!"

While true, I know what people on here mean when they use the term. Given the number of threads on the subject, my guess is that most folks know this (even those that continue to incorrectly use the expression). I think for a lot of folks it's just easier to say "price gouging" than to say "their prices are exhorbitantly high when compared to other merchants in the area."

#2. While this is also true, I don't think it does any harm to post something like this on BA. Part of hitting back at a merchant who engages in this sort of practice is letting others know about it. Some customers will shun a store just as a matter of principle when they learn about something like this. In fact, we have a store here in Maryland that engages in this sort of practice, and my impression is that local BA's have made it a point to post information about this store on BA whenever there's an opportunity. Is this hurting the store in question? I don't really know, but my guess is that it sure doesn't help.

#1 You know what people really mean when they say "price gouging," as do I, but not everyone does.

#2 I agree that hitting back at a merchant by spreading their bad name is a great idea, but the OP didn't give out name of the store, so I don't consider s/he hitting back. I consider it simply complaining, which is a waste of time in my opinion.

I did divulge the name of the store (Vulcan Beverage) in a later post... I didn't put it out there initially due to the fact that I wasn't really sure what a fair price was for this beer because I've never purchased it previously... Last thing I wanted to do was put out some false bad PR for a place. Turns out they were indeed jacking up the price and Founders was not happy to hear about it either.

Point 2. Surdyks in Minneapolis has lost a chunk of BA's over their gouging on Surly Darkness, and their response to being called on it.

Fair enough. I didn't read every post. In that case my second point about how complaining while still supporting the business does nothing to stop the practice does not apply to you.
