How much value would you guys place on a 2012 KBS? There's a beer store that's about a five minute walk from my house, and the guy who owns it and I have talked on several occasions about when his store was getting KBS and all that, but the thing is, his place never got them. I went in today to buy some other beer, and he let me know that he had a case in the back that he wasn't selling out, but he'd sell to me for $20 a bottle, because that's about what it was going for on eBay. I told him I'd think about it. Now, I have a bottle of 2011 BCBCS that I could potentially offer up for a trade to him to avoid the $20 tag he's putting on (which I think is a bit ridiculous, which he admitted himself, but he cited the prices on eBay and supply/demand economics as justification for the price), but I wanted to know how many bottles of KBS I could typically score for one bottle of BCBCS. I know a lot of it would depend on if he has any of them himself, I'm just looking for a more generalized number, like 1 bottle, a whole 4 pack, etc.

If i were you i would stop shopping at that store. It sold for anywhere between $4.99 and $6.99 here in MSP. $20 dollars is outrageous!

Tell him to go fuck himself, and let him know you would rather go to eBay and buy it there than from him. That is purely taking advantage of the customer. Just because eBay has that price does not mean it is the "going rate." I have walked out on numerous stores who have tried that on me and specifically told them I would not shop there again and would tell all my beer friends they are more interested in making a quick buck than years of loyal customer service.

While KBS is a higher trade value than before, it is NOT worth $20 a bottle.

just see what bcbcs sells for on ebay and use the ratio. i'm guessing 2 for 1.

what a shady store owner though.

$20 a bottle is absolutely insane, I was able to get a decent amount of KBS this year and the most I paid was 5.99 a bottle. If I were you either a) I would never return to this shop and b) explain to him why ebay sales show many of the problems the craft beer world faces, and that he can shove it if he wants that much for a bottle

If this ever happened at my bottle shop, I would find a new bottle shop. That is crazy talk. That would be like going to BestBuy to get an IPhone4 and them telling you, "well, it's selling for $1000 on Ebay so that's what we are charging". That is complete crap and that store needs to hear it.

I can't really tell how much you like this guy based on your post, but if you were to send an email to Founders about what this place is doing I'm positive that will be the last case of KBS they ever get.

This. There's charging a bit much, and then there's highway robbery. That guy makes highway robbery look like something good. $20 a bottle is beyond ludicrous.

And I imagine Founders WOULD care, and would be very interested to know this.

'Course, with the way things are now, it wouldn't suprise me if other people have already bought out his stock to eBay themselves or use as trade bait.

I'm in NY where most is priced high and while our KBS hits $8.99 per bottle, $20 is absurd. EBay is a joke to begin with, but at least people who sell on there are buying KBS at retail prices. Bottle shops pay much less to distributors.

If I was you, I would inform your local distributor and Founders. Neither wants stores to sell beer on Ebay.

And to answer one of your questions, I would guess BCBCS gets you between 3-5 KBS. Good luck.

Give me the phone number to your store and I'll do my best to record my conversation telling them to go fuck themselves. Such fucking nonsense.

That, sir, is quite illegal. As your attorney, I can't approve of these measures.

i'd explain to him that you're going to first talk his offer through with regional manager for founders and their distributor for his store. you know, just to make sure it's a good deal and all.

BeerAdvocate sting. I love it. Post it on youtube and link it here. Then send it to Founders. Be sure to get them to confirm the name of the shop and the price or a least ask them if they have ten pound balls.

Telling someone to go fuck themselves for their price gouging is illegal? Do tell. It won't be the first time I've broken the law.

I'd do it...but I'm currently under advisement that it's illegal to speak your mind in this country. Not surprising, really.

It is not actually 'price gouging' as beer is a luxury good (yes, I know....). The issue is that in many states, recording someone's voice without their consent is against the law. You could premise the conversation and follow this script:
"Hello, this call may be recorded for quality assurance. Sir/Madam, I just want to let you know that the prices that you are charging for KBS and the rationale you have provided my good friend 'X' are a touch to high. I would recommend you reconsider your position while enjoying a large bag of dicks. Good day."

The OP could also just not shop there. The $ vote is a solid one.
