I've never heard Breakfast mentioned as a base for KBS..However breweries usually mention that sort of thing.

KBS and Breakfast Stout are indeed different beers.

I think you will get a response. The email will go to a general person. They may say they can't answer. Which is fair if they consider proprietary. However if they give you a definitive answer to your question, bounce back to that same person and ask if you can quote their answer on Beer Advocate from their email. If they say no... I would not quote them. Or, if they did not consult a real person of know, that question if you can quote may cause them to find out and create an on the record response. It may take a few back and forth emails to get past the public relations person who receives emails for the brewery. As another BAer pointed out, sometimes people who work for the brewery answer and really may not know for sure. I am basing this on my past experiences emailing breweries with questions about beer. Theirs or otherwise. Similar subject: I know it is "generally" assumed that Pelican's Stormwatcher is the base beer for Mother of All Storms. But when you talk to the folks at the brewery they will not "officially" confirm. They will talk about it. During their last MOAS release they were doing tasting verticals that included both Stormwatcher and MOAS so you could compare. Pretty good indication.

I asked the lady at the store I went to yesterday if they had KBS and she gave me a funny look and said "well we have Breakfast Stout. I've never heard of Kentucky Breakfast Stout." :slight_frown: I don't think I'll ever be able to find it.

Was it in CA? If so, then it's remarkable that you even get FBS.

Whereabouts? There's still some Boltcutter hanging around here if you're interested. Looks like a surplus of Doom is coming in too.

I've asked Founders questions on Facebook, and they've responded every time. Go ahead and ask the source.
I've got plenty of both in my cellar from this year, and will put them side to side. Even if FBS is the base beer...a year in barrels is going to amp it up significantly, such that it really doesnt taste like the original. Either way, I'd like to know the deal too:slight_smile:

It was all over the place in NY. You couldn't get KBS?

What store did you go to? Party Source, Byrne Dairy Galeville, and the Syracuse Real Food Co-op all got their allotments.

At what point do they add the coffee to KBS? Is it added before going into the barrel?

Different beers. With breakfast stout at 8.3% and KBS at 11.2%, Barrel aging doesn't magically produce more alcohol.

Evaporation/angels share will concentrate the alcohol in the beer as liquid evaporates from the barrel. I dont know if 2% would be possible considering the amount of time they age them.

As far as my correspondence with founders goes, I have an answer, and it wasn't just "we aren't telling". I've asked for permission to quote it, if I get the green light I will later this afternoon.

I disagree. I'm a rep, and not only do I know what I'm talking about in regards to my products, but I also know a plethora about other breweries.

While, I'm sure that I'm an exception to the rule, I'm sure those who know very little are as well.

Keep in mind not everyone who sells beer comes from the forums and gets into the sheer nerdery of it all. They are often good sales or marketing people who want to work in a fun community.

Being nerdy about the product and process is great for talking to other beer geeks. To reach those who haven't had anything beyond a Sam Adams is something entirely different.

    Soapbox over. Carry on

Okay all, I got the go ahead to post up the email. "Thanks for reaching out and for attending our Founders event at the Brown Derby! Our rep was correct in that KBS and Breakfast Stout are very similar beers—they're close cousins—but the base recipe for KBS is a bit different. A lot of times we simplify our explanation when we're explaining the difference between the two with "bullet points", especially in presentations to large groups with varying levels of beer knowledge."

So pretty much they are two separate beers, although the recipes may share some similarities.

Ok...this is good to know. I'm still going to put the two of them together for taste comparison for a friend who has had neither. I think to show what a beer is like at it's base, then BBA'd would be cool...with the above mentioned caveat. I think it's probably negligable.
