Some friends and I are going to be coming to Kansas City for the Royals/Tigers series at the end of August, and I'm trying to figure out some good places to eat and drink while we're there. My understanding is that Boulevard doesn't have a taproom, so I'd be most interested in places with good tap lists with local selections. We'll probably have time to only visit one, maybe two places unfortunately. I'm not in charge of making the hotel reservations. So I'm not sure where we're staying, but I assume it'll be in the vicinity of the stadium. Thanks.
if you want to be thrust unceremoniously into kc bbq without a life jacket, you'll go to gates & sons. the quality isn't the most consistent, but when it's on, it's unbeatable, and at least the sauce is always "on". for a more consistent experience and typical dining atmosphere, try oklahoma joes. it bores me personally these days, but i've been spoiled. a sleeper option is rosedale bbq if you're feeling dive-ish. sadly, there's not much in the immediate vicinity of the stadium, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you let the bbq in right field count as your kc bbq experience. as far as tap lists, others will likely have better advice than i could offer. i will say that the bar at kauffman on the back right edge of the diamond club appears to have a quite good selection of boulevard offerings on tap and i am pretty sure you can access that bar from outside the club on the first base side of the stadium shop. outside the K, it depends on what you're looking for when you say "local" -- KC beers specifically? or beers that you can't get in michigan, like deschutes? i bring up this seemingly unnecessary question to draw attention to the fact that missouri gets way more craft import love than kansas (eg- deschutes), so you may want to remain on the east side of state line.
I'll second Gates and Oklahoma Joe's - both very solid. Jack Stack is also pretty tasty if you want a more sitdown/formal BBQ experience.
I'm an Arthur Bryants guy for BBQ. As for beer, I would head to the Westport area where you could go to McCoy's, The Foundry, Beer Kitchen, or the Riot Room (all have good beer but the first is just a brewpub and the last is a music venue). Or I would go to Waldo's pizza for awesome beer and pizza. Or the Flying Saucer always has good beer on tap (the food is not their specialty, so eat elsewhere).
The stadium is less than 4 miles from L.C.'s BBQ on Blue Prkwy. No beer, but the best damn BBQ I've ever had. The burnt ends are a must. If you aren't familiar with burnt ends, all the more reason to go.
I'm heading down for the Twins/Royals series this weekend. We are staying in the Power and Light District. I haven't had any success in finding a way to the stadium. Does anyone know of a shuttle that would get us to the stadium from that area? Looking forward to beer and BBQ!
perfect timing, i'm heading down this weekend for the Twins game on Saturday, staying near country club plaza, which looks like a giant upscale mall. Not too excited about that..
If I remember correctly that's pretty close to Westport. The country club plaza has Blanc Burgers and Bottles, and they make delicious burgers. They also have craft beer in bottles (hence the name). Might have a couple of taps now, don't know for sure though.
If you're staying on the Plaza you're only a few blocks south of Westport where there is McCoy's and Beer Kitchen. They both have good food, and a good selection of beers.
the foundry is awesome and the best place for beer imo. good food too i really liked jack stack even tho it isnt what most people think of when they think of a great divey bbq. best sides of any bbq place in kc too imo
BBQ - opinions will vary based on people sauce preference or meat of choice. Most people will agree though that you cannot go wrong with Gates, Arthur Bryant's, OK Joes and Jack Stack. I agree with the above that LC's is great and under the radar along with Big T's. Beer - As many have stated hit up the Foundry, Flying Saucer, Waldo Pizza, or Riot Room.
