I find it funny how people think I am crazy to spend the money I do on beer. I always use the wine comparison to justify my spending(not that I need to). I think we can agree the greatest beer in the world whether it be Pliny,Heady,Westy,Cantillon.... is priced under $50. Now the greatest wine,scotch,cognac..... is priced in the thousands. We at times are looked down upon by the wine/scotch/cognac drinker because of our choice beverage. I personally think we should be grateful. If the high affluent group abandons its wine and embraces our craft beer what will that do to the price? Let them keep their nose in the air as we keep ours in the suds.

Hell, many of the best beers in the world are under $5 - or even under $2 a serving.

Still, I find if you proselytize some people will think you're crazy. Comes with the territory.

Let's also keep things in perspective.
I know, OP, just a typo. But if I don't mention it someone else will. (EDIT: too late)

I agree w/ the sentiment though. Just keep in mind, other people's ignorance about beer isn't your problem.

It's not hard for me to imagine a 750ml beer selling in the low thousands at some point in the future, especially since over a third of the people on this site actually *want* higher prices according to the recent poll on here. However, I doubt it'll ever get as crazy as wine/spirits.

Beer is Beer, Wiine is Wine, Scotch is Scotch. I think they look down on the people who by box wine or house brand scotch. It's all relative. We drink what we like at a price we like. They do the same.

    Cheers!

Believe it or not, I think there will still be some brewers out there that will not bend over their customers just because they can. Some will, no doubt, but the greatest beers in the world can be brewed at a relatively low cost so someone should be there to fill the void if all the popular guys go for the gold.

The people who actually want higher prices have some points, but I personally don't agree with them for the most part. I don't care what people think about beer (from the we'll be more respected if it costs more view) and I think people with more money are able to have their way with enough other things like it is. I don't think it's good for beer to price people out of parts of the market, as beer is something that has always brought people of all stripes together, and I think it's cool that the average joe is able to try the best, most sought after beers on the planet.

I welcome every group of people in the discovery and enjoyment of good beer, and if prices in some segments start to skyrocket, there's still going to be great beer to be had at decent prices elsewhere. It simply doesn't cost that much to brew amazing beer. If all else fails, my homebrew is at the point where I know I'll survive!

I don't think the prices of wine and scotch are crazy. For wine, you're paying for terroir (land) which is limited by geography, soil, climate, and a bunch of other factors. For scotch you're paying for time, as the best whiskies age for anywhere between 12 and 24 years before bottling.

Neither of these factors come into play with beer, except for the barrel-aged varieties which do see a huge markup as a result.

    Here's how I see it.
It's my money, I'll do what I want with it. If people have a problem with it, that's their problem not mine.
If I choose to spend my money on beer, good for me.

Seems like you have a bit of an inferiority complex. The fact is that the vast majority of wine/scotch/cognac drinkers couldn't give a rats ass about what you drink or don't drink, and not everyone who drinks wine/scotch/cognac is "high affluent" and has their "nose in the air".

    Let's keep things in perspective.

With gas shooting up uncontrollably, I can see your point. Once I finish the personal quest to knock off the Beers of Fame, Im going straight to staples. Great Lakes and Fullsteam. Maybe Triangle mixed in somewhere. Affordability is key for a first year teacher.

Just about everybody with disposable income has an interest or two that they drop an inordinate amount of cash on, whether that's craft beer, imported cigars, designer clothing, high-end audio equipment, or fancy cars. And just about everybody thinks that everybody else's expensive interests are frivolous and pointless.

If you can afford it, spend money as you please on whatever your passion is, because everybody else is doing the same - even if they don't share your particular passion. I never feel badly about my beer purchases as long as I consider it money spent on experiences, not items.

Yes indeed. After plowing throug many gallons of homebrewed ale and an equal amount of store bought craft beer I had my first taste of Coors in quite some time and enjoyed it immensely
I liked it so much that it made me wonder if they had recently bumped up the recipe.
My way of "keeping it in perspective" is to avoid chasing after high priced beer when I can find beer that I absolutely love that costs much less.
