Fritz Maytag should have done his homework. In 1998 there were plenty of bottles of beer going for $5 a bottle. One such example is Triple Bock.

While you mention other alcohol products, I think beer is easier to reproduce at the same quality level and in less time. Many of the most expensive wines are a unique product, and several of the most expensive scotches are driven by scarcity, often due to limited runs or closed distilleries. Or even look at Pappy van Winkle 23 - there are few products that are aged for so long before initial release.

If you are worried about the price of beer, learn to homebrew. You will never make a car that will rival a Rolls, make a wine that will rival a fine French wine, but you can learn to make a beer to rival any of the high-going-higher price beers (well perhaps not Belgian gueuzes, though Wild American Ales are certainly in reach). Really. Just another thing that is great about beer.

Yep, Triple Bock was around, but I still think Fritz got it right. (New emphasis added to his original quote below)

People want a contradiction - they want beer to be respected, yet they want beer to remain the "common man's drink" and remain cheap.

So spending a lot on something makes no sense to them. Hey, it's just beer.

If you count eBay, Wooden Hell just sold for about $1500 a few days ago.

You have to make beer look more expensive by drinking it in a snifter.

    It doesn't, apparently.
