I just got my new three tier system and wanted to go to a bigger mash tun. I have a chance to get a keg for the mash with a false bottom, my question is does the keg hold its temp well while the mash is resting? Thanks in advance.

You need to insulate it. Some us an old sleeping bag. I made a cozy out of refletix, which works fine.

I've never insulated mine, even during the winter outside, and it never drops more than about 2 degrees, even with the lid off. Of course, if it's colder than about 35-40 F outside, I don't brew; not sure how cold you'll be brewing in.

It's something I was curious about myself when I switched to the keg for mashing, and I would insulate if needed, just never had the need to. Ymmv, sounds like people above have different experiences; just sharing mine. Cheers.

I've also never insulated mine, it can drop as much as 4 degrees over an hour but by then all the conversion has taken place so it's not a big deal. I've considered insulating mine but after 12 years with it as is I haven't gotten around to it yet.
