Hi everybody, This is my first time posting so I apologize if I leave out any needed information. I have a pretty basic Edgestar kegerator with a D coupler. I just picked up a 1/6 barrel of Jack's Abbey Hoponius Union but I am running into an issue when tapping. When connecting the coupler and rotating, it feels very loose (wiggles very easily). When I pull the handle, press down, and connect the coupler, you can hear the CO2 rushing out and even feel it shooting out of the coupler when you put your finger on it. So it seems that very little, if any of the CO2 is actually making its way into the keg. I have had a 1/6 barrel of Hoponius in this kegerator before without issue so I'm guessing the type D coupler is fine. I did take the coupler apart for a cleaning before I picked up the keg but I have always done that without problem. Has anybody had this issue before? Could it be a problem with the keg itself? Any help is greatly appreciated and if more info is needed to help, please let me know. Thanks!
Is the coupler new? If not, how old is it? Couplers that are used a great amount seem to have their washer "crushed" allowing air to escape form the top as you stated. You may need to replace the coupler, but yes, occasionally the top of the keg doesn't seal well with the coupler. In a bar environment, it can be as simple as just switching it to another tap (coupler) but in a home set up, you may need to get a new coupler. Hope that helps.
A few possibilities are; 1) you forgot to put the gasket that goes around the bottom of the body of the coupler back on, or at least you didn't put it on the right way(such as upside down). 2) the keg nut is busted or loose. Either way if you have gas coming up around the coupler it means it isn't sealing to the keg. You can also try just taking the coupler and putting it back on at a 180 degree and for whatever reason sometimes it works.
Thanks for the replies guys. I ended up replacing the gasket that goes on the bottom of coupler and that took care of the issue. There must have been something wrong with this old one where it was letting CO2 out. Thanks again!
