So I am head over heels with the great beers of San Diego. So I decided to take my hobby to a whole new lever and invest in a Kegerator. However, I don't know what to look for exactly in terms of quality build. I was look at Costco's website at one, but the reviews weren't exactly enticing. Any reccomendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advanced.
Have one I got from Costco, it works fine, hit or miss on if your local store has them or not, around $350. If you want to upgrade to something nicer and more energy efficient go to Beverage Factory around the corner from Alesmith on Cabot. Probably have 8-12 different models and can order up anything else you might want.
When I was back east my father and I both bought dual tap kegerators from http://www.kegconnection.com/ Great company and customer service.
if your'e at all handy, build a keezer, it would most likely come out to less than a bev air, last forever, not to mention the fact that you can design them to match your furniture style http://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=256871 It seems like a lot of work, but its really simple, temp controller on a chest freezer, co2 setup, and figure out how to mount your taps since your using a chest freezer with an external temp controller, the freezer itself actually works much less than it would in normal use, so they last for a long time
Travis at Tap That in Oceanside can hook you up. He has great payment options as well and can service it if its ever needed. tapthatkegnow.com
If you can get ahold of a used (cheap or free) refrigerator than grab it and convert it to a kegerator. Very easy to convert and if you buy all the parts online you would dave even more. That's what I did. Got a used fridge from my workplace they were gonna throw out and brought it home and now its my beer fridge/kegerator. I think I paid around $300 for all the parts including the CO2 tank full. Check craiglist.
Anyone know what I should expect to pay for a sixtel of something like Sculpin? I was thinking about converting one of the taps in my homebrew kegarator for a commercial sixtel but the prices I've seen are terrible. Would be cheaper to buy 10 six packs of Sculpin at $14.99 each compared to the sixtel prices I've seen.
Sculpin is one of the more expensive kegs to buy. I had a 5g of grapefruit sculpin recently that was $145. Regular was the same price though. You're definitely not getting a per-ounce discount on BP kegs. Take a look at some of the El Segundo offerings. Super reasonable pricing (just got the Blue House IPA for $90) and generally pretty fresh, depending on where you pick it up.
I actually just contacted Ballast Point via e-mail, originally he quoted me 109. Then once I said it was going to be my first keg to be attached to my kegerator he lowered the price to 99 dollars for a 5 gallon of Grapefruit Sculpin. Of course this is excluding the keg deposit. I am also going to get Alpine Nelson as my other tap. Pretty damn excited to be honest. As for my kegerator I am probably going to just let the pro's from BeverageFactory hook me up. Trying to find a Alpine Nelson Tap handle, hard as hell to find.
That's a really solid price for a Sculpin keg. I actually think mine was around 120. Congrats on the setup! It really is pretty awesome to have a home tap setup. Enjoy!
How did you land an Alpine keg? Last I heard they still didn't have enough to do end consumer keg sales.
Yeah, Green flash from what I was thinking. Although I e-mailed Alpine and Pat (the owner) responded and said BevMo as well. So I dont know.
