Moon Dog brewery in Vic, Australia have a beer they call Love Tap Double Lager. What does double lager mean? Also it was entered in the Australian Craft Beer Industry awards under a category called "Kellerbier" in the broader class of light lager. What exactly does that mean as a style? By the way if you have tried this beer it is a good one but I would not describe it as "light" in any area. Good bitterness and ABV is 5.9% not 7% as per original entry of this beer.

1). With beer Double and Imperial of a style typically mean much higher ABV than most, so that beer is listed as almost double the normal ABV for a Pils style lager.

2). Here is a brief description of Kellerbeer as a style along with examples.

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/131/

3). If the BA who entered the beer in the database got it wrong or the beer has changed, you can file a change request from its description page to ask that it be fixed. The more documentation you provide the moderators the sooner the change gets made. Eg, If it's listed as retired but isn't, illustrate that it is still being brewed.

If I get back to OZ any tine soon I'll give the beer a look-see but I don't recollect seeing it in NSW which is where my trips usually take me.

    Enjoy!

Thanks for the reply. It's a Victorian beer. I picked up a bottle at the 2014 CBIA awards. I also have not seen in on shops in NSW but will keep an eye out. I don't seem to be able to do all the add/change requests functions via the iPad app. Will look try in the website version to submit change and provide evidence eg photo of bottle and links etc... Thanks again.

I have no idea why Moon Dog brewery is labeling Love Tap as a Double Lager. That beer is 5% ABV which is pretty standard for a lager; Budweiser is 5% ABV.

The beer is somewhat hoppy with 34 IBUs listed. Maybe Moon Dog thinks that the word “double” is associated with hoppy? If so, this is not how the adjective of double is typically used. Maybe this is a Down Under thing!?!

    Cheers!

Maybe it's lagered double long?

Yeah, no idea either. It's quite hoppy, so maybe it's double hops for a light lager?

It's in a few places in ACT, so I assume it would be in NSW as well

The new BJCP guidelines describe this style as "The original style of Kellerbier from the Franconia area of Germany. A much older style compared to the relatively more recent pale Helles-Style Kellerbier that is popular in the Munich area today."

Has anyone had one of these brewed by a U.S. brewer? If so, what are your thoughts? If not, what are your favorites among the offering? Leikeim is probably the most easily obtainable here, but there are also Kulmbacher Monchshof Kellerbier, Löwenbräu Kellerbier, Mahr’s Kellerbier, St. Georgen Kellerbier, Tucher Kellerbier Naturtrub, etc.

(NOTE: not talking here about Kellerpils or the pale Kellerbier. Thanks.)

I wish I could find St. Georgen any more, let alone other good examples of the "style."

*Edit: Didn't remember I'd tasted and reviewed this one recently. Have to grab another... if I can find one that wasn't bottled in 2013.

Yeah- I thought St. Georgen disappeared from these shores years ago, or at least it seems that way. I loved that beer.

I remember having it in Bamberg and thinking how much better it was than over here. Not surprising, for sure, but probably one of my first inklings of understanding beer at the source.

“Has anyone had one of these brewed by a U.S. brewer?”

I have posted about my favorite US brewed Amber Kellerbier many times on BA: Triumph Aldstadt Lager

Below is a copy from a previous post:

I was pleased to see that they had Aldstadt Lager on tap. I have had this beer before (both at the New Hope location but also the Triumph Brewpub in Philadelphia). The story of Aldstadt Lager is:

“Our brewer went to Germany in search of the best beers in the World. What he found was a style of beer known as Ungespundet Lagerbier at Wagner-Brau in Franconia. Aldstadt Lager is merely his tribute to the greatest beer in the world.”

I drank a couple of Aldstadt Lagers with my duck breast sandwich. I thoroughly enjoyed drinking those beers!

On multiple occasions I have had the opportunity to drink Mahr's Ungespundet-hefetrüb on draft (plus once on cask). I also enjoy Mahr's Ungespundet-hefetrüb but I find the Triumph Aldstadt Lager even more enjoyable to drink (likely a factor of freshness).”

    Cheers!

Yeah, Wagner is definitely darker than say, Spezial. Assuming Tom (or maybe it was Patrick) followed their lead, it would be amber.

As a side note, Mahrs is no longer serving the U bier vom Fass. Apparently drinkers are asking for a colder beer these days.

Dave, the Aldstadt Lager beers are definitely amber in color.

But pale colored Kellerbiers can be tasty too! You let me know!

You mean at the tavern in Bamberg? When did that happen? I was there over Christmas and they were still serving it that way -- had multiple Seidla myself. I would be extremely surprised if they have stopped what must be a centuries'-old tradition somehow.

EDIT: couple of pics to illustrate

I had one or two in November as well. Time moves on, even in Franconia, unfortunately. :slight_frown:

Dave, how is this for irony (although I will probably be told I am not be using that word properly); I posted this earlier today:

    “Several quotes come to mind:

    · Bob Dylan: “The Times They Are a-Changin'”

    · Unknown: “The only constant is change”

    · Ben Franklin: “…but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”

    Cheers!

Quoting the post you linked to: "He said there is no concern about over-carbonation because they do not use CO2 on their kegs, they use N2. He also said they finish their kegs daily so they do not get old. Apparently they have been serving kegs only in the Biergarten for 15 years."

Kegs only in the Biergarten for 15 years? I drank gravity pours out there just a couple of years ago. I just sent Stephan a message myself, asking about all this. Will report back...

I have no clue about the Biergarten, as I've only been there (unfortunately) during the slow months in the US (read Winter:grinning:)
On the other hand, I have no reason to doubt Fred or Jim
