Ethereal's Baba Yaga Day is Jan. 29, and they're celebrating by rolling out the 2022 edition of Bellerophon this weekend.

In a few weeks we'll be driving through Louisville at lunch time. Does anyone have a recommendation for a brewery with good food for lunch? I'd prefer flights or small pours available. I don't mind straying 10 minutes or so from I64/I71 but don't need to get too far off course.

    Monnik would be my choice.

Monnik is probably the best choice. If you like BBQ then Against the Grain is a good choice as well and is closer to the freeways. Although very little in Louisville is more than 10 minutes from the freeway.

I plan to be in Lexington very briefly. Two questions:

    1. Is there any West Virginia beer readily available in Lexington? I need it for a state tick

    2. Can I purchase beer at gas stations or supermarkets?

    Thanks!

I don't know if there is WV beer at all.

Yes, gas stations and supermarkets carry beer.

Thanks! I assumed since they're your neighbors that there would be some distro... I guess i can check out what local Total Wine has on their site

So no WV beer in the Lexington Total Wine...

Generally - are there any restrictions in buying beer in Kentucky? Do gas stations, pharmacies, and supermarkets sell it or specialty stores only?

No beer restrictions, but Kroger/Walmart/etc have to have separate locations to sell hard liquor/wine.

Most of the WV beer is in the panhandle closer to DC money unfortunately. Abolishionist Ale in Charlestown, Abolisionist makes good beer but doubt you’ll find it deep into WV anywhere. I think there is a decent craft brewery down near Waynesville at the New River bridge area.

Thanks for the insight! Surprised that they don't distribute anything to their neighbor to the West. I guess my WV state tick is not meant to be.

Looking for anything new or noteworthy in Louisville… New breweries? New good local beer shops? New bars with great tap lists?

I have not traveled to Louisville since last summer and some of my favorites were still not open after the pandemic (Holy Grale which looks like it is back and Louisville Beer Store which closed permanently).

I've heard to look at Old Town Wine & Liquor as a bottle shop.

I'm partial to Sergios World Beer down in Butchertown. They usually have an excellent tap selection and their global packaged beer selection is insane. Check dates, I avoid styles that are super age sensitive, and I would advise against buying packaged American beer there because prices are excessive. But for European imports it is unbeatable and the tap selection is usually very good. Plus, most of the bar tenders and regulars are pleasant fellow beer nerds and the owner is one of the most interesting people that I have ever talked beer with. Outside bottles for sharing are welcome with open arms as well

One of the places I make a point to stop on each visit to Louisville and I agree with your comments. I wonder if we ever crossed paths there over the years

Always a regular spot for me as it always seems to be near my airbnb. Beers are hit and miss in my experience but I have found some great bourbons there over the years.

Could be, it was like 2017 or 2018 that i was visiting Louisville most regularly. Met a ton of nice and interesting people at that bar.

I was last there at the end of 2021 and the only new place I tried was Atrium. I wasn't super impressed but they had a lot of stuff going on. Also, if you've never been to Holsopple way out on the east end they had some good classic styles when I've visited.

So far I haven't been able to think of any breweries that are worth going out of your way for in WV. I've done some decent research. Nobody seems to get above 'baseline' for me. There's always some weird issue even with places that look like they're half decent sized. Maybe somebody becomes prominent later. Maybe it doesn't.

I've been to Abolitionist and I didn't think much about their offerings. I was already in the area for something else.

I'm not against driving. Richmond is two hours but really three due to bad traffic, Harrisburg is two York is an hour and a half. I've even driven THROUGH West Virginia but that was a three day swing though Jackie O's up to Columbus through to Hoppin' Frog and over to Cleveland.

    ---

I might create a separate thread but I am looking for Louisville advice. I've got one day and maybe a day and a part of a night as part of a longer trip. I'm looking at Against the Grain. I'm thinking Goodwood. Maybe I don't go further than that, but there seems like a handful of interesting options but no clear winners. I want to develop a couple of more options. Only absolutely clear thing I'll be doing is the Louisville Slugger Museum.

    No sours, no IPAs (generally)

Visit Monnik and Atrium instead. Holy Grale/Grales for brewpub. I do not recommend the two places you mentioned.
