If you've ever wondered why they don't just make it more, its because the dry hop is 12 days long and takes up all of their tank space.

Not to mention they don't really have much more tank space than a home brewer :-D

Homebrewers can find the recipe for Citra if they really want a lot of it. Of course, perhaps they can't actually find enough of the hop itself.

Citra isn't all that hard to source. Sign a contract for them a year in advance and you're good. Kern has been at this long enough to plan. It's the Amarillo that's in true shortage if anything. A lot of the Amarillo harvest in Idaho got flooded last year and many breweries got shorted. 40% of Citra (the beer) is amarillo. I know they also use Amarillo in their Just Outstanding so I don't think the hops are the reason.

I'm guessing it's the tank space and time til completion. If making Citra year round made sense financially (like how Pliny is a staple at RR), I'm sure they'd do it. I kinda wish they would.

I think there's also water rights and limitations issues when it comes to Kern. At least that's what I recall hearing when there. They're only allotted a certain amount of water.

Someone should go to KRBC and show them BPT. Just in case they haven't realized how useful it is yet

Do you think a moped/scooter could make it up to the brewery that time of year?

If I remember correctly, the KRBC employees were smiling in self-satisfaction during the summer 2012 release, taking and posting pictures of the communist breadline online. The contrast with how Pete from Alesmith reacted to the fustercluck BA speedway release in 2011 - he was walking around the parking lot, shaking his head with distress, vowing 'never again' - is striking, and hopefully not telling of how KRBC will handle future Citra bottle releases.

Yeah they were super cool at the Feb 2013 release also. Thanking everyone for coming and what not, even though they knew a lot of people would not get bottles at least inviting them in for pints...

After the douche baggers that was up in the front of the line (last Feb Friday release) that had a dozen or so chairs saving for their friends who were back at the hotel or wherever sleeping and others that were saving a spot or two for friends that were showing up later in the morning, the following saturday release went alot better. Kyle should know what to expect for the next release. Expecting people to show up around 3 or 4am, he should be out in front early enough to take the first 70 names down on a list and hand out a raffle for each individual thats in line at that time. Simple. Everybody here and elsewhere should know what to expect for the next release in November. If you dont leave the LA/OC area early enugh to make the 3-4 hour trek up to Kernville then expect to get pints instead of bottles. I've been going since two and half years know. My first time up I got there 15 minutes before they opened the doors and I was #22. Last Feb we got there around 715am and we ended up with #58-59. After all the douche baggers cut in line just before they opened the doors. We were probably around 40 or so before the douche baggers cut. If I do make the trek this time around I will or hopefully leave alot earlier than last Feb.

Well I meant more, if you're a homebrewer trying to source it right now.

The Amarillo used in Citra isn't quote 40%, though. It's actually a bit under 20%; there are 4 boil additions of Citra, four dry hop additions of Citra and two dry hop additions of Amarillo (they use Nugget as well as a bittering hop). The recipe is from Kyle's mouth on the CYBI podcast.

I remember hearing talk they they were looking into a BPT/Online type release after the last clusterfuck. Not sure if they will go through with it, but it would be best. I think they like the business of the 3 days of being packed so they might do 3 sessions on BPT and all would be well with the world.

I wish breweries just dropped their beers with no updates/news feeds low bottle limits, a bro calls a bro and organically the bottles get released
