Inebriated Innovations, LLC* has started a Kickstarter campaign for a temperature control system for homebrewing. I built something like a son-of-fermentation-chiller a few years ago and have always used a greenhouse thermostat to run it, so I can't really comment on how useful the bells and whistles would be, but I would love to hear people's thoughts. I am probably going to upgrade to a chest freezer with a Thermowell or something similar pretty soon, and I will be in the market for something like this or one of its competitors. (The delivery date is unfortunately not until spring of next year, and there is no guarantee that they will ship on time. So actually I am not inclined to buy one of these, but I could be persuaded if this offers features that would be worth the wait.)

*I don't have any affiliation with Inebriated Innovations or Kickstarter.

Seems like a product that would be sold through "The Sharper Image" or "Skymall." It's a completely unnecessary product...but cool if you like gadgets.

Which features do you consider unecessary? And why?

I think it would very helpful. I would love to be able to monitor and adjust my fermentation temps while away from my house. Sometime I dont brew because I wont be around to adjust the temp. Maybe it can keep track of the temperature fluctuations as well, that would be helpful.

Monitoring and adjusting temps of your fermentation chamber, for instance, isn't something that needs to be done from anywhere in the world. I set the temp control at the beginning of fermentation...and change it maybe once more before the beer is done. I check on how things are moving along every 2 days or so...which involves opening the chest freezer, or looking at the display on the temp controller.

I don't think my method is unique.

    I'm not saying it couldn't be useful...gadgets are useful...they just aren't essential.

Agree, but why are you putting your temp controller IN the freezer?

Ha! Only the temp probe for the controller is in the freezer. I have another thermometer in the freezer, that I check, and I also like to make sure everything is going alright with the fermentation.

    You can see it here:

What happened to the other pic? I was assuming the lad was checking the temp of a bucket fermenter.

This one was next to the one I wanted...image shack was acting screwy. It's my son, "helping" me with installing the trellis system for growing hops. He's a goober...but a cute one.
