My wife & I are doing some planning (family-wise & remodeling-wise) & were looking for input about draft setups. We also have friends over fairly frequently & kids under 5 are common, so just trying to plan ahead. So, if your significant other is also into the hobby and you have little ones (or little ones are over often): 1) Where is your setup? Do you have it in a "cellar" kind of room that you just keep locked up or is it out in the open or...? 2) What exactly is your setup? I'm curious to if one type (kegerator, keezer, etc) seems to be more popular or if the other-half's tend to find one option less of an eyesore than another. My wife doesn't like basements, so in the kitchen may be an option, but it would have to look nice & probably be counter height..? 3) Are faucet locks enough or is your set up essentially "out of reach" or do you have other methods of kid-proofing? Thanks for any input you can share!
Could always go old school like my parents did, and just give them a good ass whooping if they ever sneak a beer underage. Or for younger kids go with faucet lock/combination lock combo. Or possibly a line shutoff valve. Also a quick google search turned up this. https://www.google.com/search?q=Lockitdown™ Refrigerator Door lock kit &ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-USfficial&client=firefox-a&channel=sb
My kegerator/keezer is in the garage and my kids are not a problem. But, I have had handles pulled multiple times by other people's kids (ages 3-5). The same kid has never done it twice It only happens if we end up in the garage for some random reason, I never worry about a kid going in by themselves and draining a keg. If my kegerator was in my house, I would probably have tap locks, but they would probably not be in place if we were having people over. If you have a tower on your kegerator, you probably don't have to worry about kids until they are teenagers, the little kids can't reach and the bigger kids know not to reach, the teenagers need taplocks
Does anyone with tap locks worry that their teenagers might be enterprising enough to just open the fridge, disconnect the coupler and find another way at the beer, maybe with a hand pump? Or do you guys have locks on your kegerator doors too? I sometimes consider getting a tap and/or door lock, but then I remember all of the bottles in the cellar as well as the various liquor bottles that I know I can't lock up, and then forget about the whole thing.
If I had a teenager that went through all that work to get to the beer...I honestly would not be that mad at him. However I would suggest a lock or way of knowing someones been in it. My good friend has 4 children, he puts tape with his signature around the handles. His 16 year old has gotten into the kegerator once or twice, so now he has tap locks, and the tape around the handle.
My BevAir came with a door lock. All I have to do is untap the keg and lock the door(s). It's a simple operation and just another reason to spend $ on great hardware as opposed to bargain-basement stuff from the Orient.
