I really just came up with this on my phone waiting in line at the dentist... I just think that when things are aged in Pappy their trade value shoots through the roof.

It would be interesting to see how some examples rank by this algorithm. I'm too lazy, but I'm sure someone can give me the numbers for stuff like PVW DL, Veritas 10, Weyerbacher Rapture, Bell's Black Note, Abacus, etc. Just to see how commonly trade beers fall on the spectrum

Black Note came in at a +15

Not perfect, but I just did it to have some fun.

But one could only hope its succesor follows in the footsteps of the Denar which has triumphed since becoming the currency in Iraq.

It hits the right spot. How about DQ? Thagr81us keeps looking for DQ for a while and he offered 6 bottles including DDG, Chocolate Rain batch 1 & 2, Rare, Melange 3 and BASC. Can you run through your formula to see if his offer is even close?

The three variations of Bourbon Barrel Ommegang (3 philosophers, abbey, and adoration) beat black note by a mile. When I listed any of them for trade, I couldn't even get $4$ ($30)...your formula is flawed or people need to start paying attention to my ISO/FTs.

do you still have them? i don't have ammo right now, but bourbon barrel 3 philosophers blew me away at a fest some time back, and i'd trade something good for it.

edit: edited out "funds" since it sounded weird. but i'm On Trading Hiatus (like everyone else) regardless.

along those same lines, I always findit somewhat amusing with the amount of pretrades as these come out as well... i understand buying beer to take care of trading partners and such... and i also see people fly to or call every store in the tri-county area looking to see if X-beer has landed, if it'll land this week, if there's a list, how many can they get etc....I always wonder how many pretrades- if any - fall through with the inability to track down the beer they had a hook up for...

I've a rare and a few KH.... unfortunately, haven't had the best of reason to pop the rare yet..i was lucky enough to sample the KH which was mighty tasty.. i'm sure the time will com to pop one of them and enjoy them to their full delight..

in regards to whale status - is it all in the eye of the beholder or in the eye of the seeker?

Whatever, this is a phenomenal beer. Having it for the second time right now & it's right with (a good bottle) of Kuhnhenn BBBW as the best BA Barleywine I've ever had. Simply amazing.

    Without reading this whole thread...

I don't think it will ever be in the same class as Rare at the same time. It will obviously continue to draw bigger and bigger offers but Rare will always be one step ahead because Rare is an older one-off and was more limited. But that isn't to say that King Henry in five years won't be in the same class as Rare is in today's trading boards.

If they used the same barrels as Rare, how could it be more limited?

*Aside* Does anyone really know how many bottles of KH were put out there? I remember when it was first released it was 10k, but now it seems like 12k is the accepted number...how did we get here? Educated guesses? Did Rare really have 12k bottles?

If I remember correctly Rare is numbered. I'm assuming at some point there was a thread and the highest numbered bottle chimed in.

Also, any indication as to bottle counts that were on-premise only at bars or restaurants? If I remember, in states like MN, entire allocations of Bramble (perhaps KH & Coffee) were given to on-premise accounts.

My only point being that actual bottles in the trade market is a more important number than reported bottle counts and could skew things.

Michigans allotment was eight cases - all to restaurants, half of which went to one individual restaurant.
