I knitted a hop hat for my fiance's birthday last weekend. We took it to Easter and the first thing relatives thought of was Sprout from Green Giant. Then they got the memo it was a hop. Last night I brought it to Portsmouth Brewery and then Seacoast Homebrew Club. I got a lot of positive feedback including, "I'm not a hop head, but I want one." The next set of feedback I got was maybe the leaves could be smaller and another layer or two. What do you think? Our flour tin is standing in for one of our heads. Colors are a bit off due to cell phone camera and lighting.
I'd wear it. Definitely stand out a bit while snowboarding. Another layer with smaller leaves would probably help but other than that I think it's pretty sweet, nice work.
I can attest that its a pretty sweet hat, and would be very nice if I was the brew outside making a batch in the winter. I like how the leaves can be used to cover my ears as well. you cant really see too well but the brim area can be folded up or down to cover more or less of your forehead too. Lol the funny thing is she made this right in front of me and I had NO idea what it was until it was done. i think more leaves and smaller (about the same proportions) would be a good move and then alternate them -V-V-V-V V-V-V-V-V -V-V-V-V -V-V-V- ok my ASCII art sucks
I picked up some yarn that is more of a yellow green than fern color. I think I will do a neon one, too. Still playing with the pattern before I make the next one. I will be sure to post pics.
Now that I am going into production I have three colors for hop hats: Top - Grass, Left - Fern, and Right - Neon
This is awesome! I'd agree with another layer or two and smaller leaves all around maybe. I like the bottom right-neon. maybe do a test patch with mixtures of the yarns, or would that get too thick with two strands?
Hey all, just wanted to pop in to say Lauren has been knitting away to get a few done for some people who showed interest. She had thought about Etsy, and may do that soon, but wanted to give BA and members of our home Brew club first crack, and also help keep the cost down (Etsy takes a cut, as does Paypal and every other service. its a necessary evil but if we can save folks a few bucks we would rather have them use it for a pint than a service fee) I suppose one option is that we could do a few small knits with each of the colors and mail them off for a few dollar deposit, cover shipping and a little bit of time, and when you decide you want a hat, apply the cost of the sample to the hat. She will have to make that decision, but it is a way to see the texture and color in person (monitors never display the correct colors)
Yes, swatches are possible. Yes, Etsy is in my future. And I made a page for the hats on my blog: http://larksheadbrewing.wordpress.com/hop-hat/ Thank everyone for the feedback. I hope to have a 4 to 5 layer hat done in the next forty eight hours. I will post pics on my blog.
Alright. I got my Etsy shop open now. I will be adding more designs in the near future. http://www.etsy.com/shop/larksheadbrewing
I have to chime back in and say what a great hat my hophead is! I have been wearing it religiously (a joke as my persona is Bro. Woody, a Trappist monk in the Order of Disorder) to fests and gatherings and it is always a hit.
